The story of Rapunzel is a German fairy tale that was first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812 in their collection of folktales called “Children’s and Household Tales” (“Kinder- und Hausmärchen” in German). The Brothers Grimm were Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who were German academics and collectors of folklore.

However, the story of Rapunzel existed in oral tradition before it was written down by the Brothers Grimm. The earliest known version of the story dates back to the 17th century and was published by Italian writer Giambattista Basile in his collection of fairy tales titled “Pentamerone.”

So while the Brothers Grimm are credited with popularizing the story of Rapunzel and making it widely known, the exact author and origin of the story are unknown, and it is believed to have evolved through oral tradition.

RAPUNZEL’S ESCAPE

Once upon a time, in a far-off kingdom, there was a beautiful young woman named Rapunzel. She lived in a tower in the middle of a deep, dark forest, where she was kept prisoner by an evil witch. Rapunzel had long, golden hair that flowed down to the ground, and every day, the witch would climb up the tower using her hair to visit her. But Rapunzel dreamed of escaping and seeing the world beyond the forest. One day, a handsome prince came to her rescue, and with his help, Rapunzel was able to break free from the witch’s clutches and start a new life.

ACT 1:

(Scene: The inside of Rapunzel’s tower)

NARRATOR: Rapunzel was trapped in her tower, all alone, with no one to talk to except the wicked witch who kept her prisoner.

RAPUNZEL: (sighs) Oh, I wish I could leave this place and see the world beyond these walls.

WITCH: (entering the tower) What are you muttering about, my dear?

RAPUNZEL: (startled) Oh, nothing, just thinking out loud.

WITCH: Don’t even think about trying to escape, my dear. You know that I have the power to keep you here forever.

RAPUNZEL: (sadly) Yes, I know.

WITCH: (smiling wickedly) Now, let down your hair, so I can climb up and visit you.

(Rapunzel lets down her long hair, and the witch climbs up to the tower)

NARRATOR: Day after day, the witch would visit Rapunzel and bring her food and supplies. But Rapunzel’s heart was heavy, and she longed for a way to escape.

ACT 2:

(Scene: Outside the tower)

NARRATOR: One day, a handsome prince was riding through the forest when he heard Rapunzel singing.

PRINCE: (listening) What a beautiful voice! I must find out who is singing that song.

NARRATOR: The prince followed the sound of the singing until he came upon the tower where Rapunzel was trapped.

PRINCE: (calling up to the tower) Hello, is anyone there?

RAPUNZEL: (leaning out of the window) Who are you?

PRINCE: I am a prince, and I heard you singing. Who are you?

RAPUNZEL: (smiling) My name is Rapunzel. I’m a prisoner in this tower.

PRINCE: (determined) Don’t worry, Rapunzel. I’ll rescue you.

NARRATOR: The prince searched for a way to get inside the tower and found a hidden door. He climbed up the tower, using Rapunzel’s hair as a rope.

ACT 3:

(Scene: Inside the tower)

NARRATOR: The prince found Rapunzel in her tower and promised to take her away from there forever.

PRINCE: Rapunzel, you don’t have to stay here any longer. Come with me, and we’ll start a new life together.

RAPUNZEL: (excited) Yes, I will come with you!

NARRATOR: The prince cut Rapunzel’s hair, and they climbed down the tower together. But the witch was waiting for them at the bottom.

ACT 4:

(Scene: Outside the tower)

WITCH: (angry) How dare you try to take my prisoner away!

PRINCE: (bravely) You can’t stop us, witch. We’re leaving, and we’re never coming back.

NARRATOR: The prince and Rapunzel ran through the forest, trying to escape the witch. But the witch was powerful and would not give up easily.

WITCH: (chasing after them) You can’t escape me! I’ll catch you, and you’ll be sorry!

PRINCE: (determined) We can’t let her catch us. We have to keep running.

RAPUNZEL: (breathless) I’m getting tired. I don’t know if I can keep going.

PRINCE: (encouragingly) Don’t give up, Rapunzel. We’re almost there.

NARRATOR: Just as the witch was about to catch up to them, the prince and Rapunzel came upon a river.

PRINCE: (thinking quickly) We can cross the river. The witch won’t be able to follow us.

NARRATOR: The prince and Rapunzel jumped into the river and swam to the other side. The witch tried to follow them, but she couldn’t swim.

WITCH: (yelling) You haven’t seen the last of me! I’ll get you someday!

NARRATOR: The prince and Rapunzel continued on their journey, hand in hand, free from the witch’s grasp. They lived happily ever after, exploring the world and starting a new life together.

And so, Rapunzel escaped from her tower with the help of a brave prince. Together, they overcame the witch’s evil plan and started a new life full of adventure and happiness. From that day forward, Rapunzel never forgot the lessons she learned: to never give up hope, to always believe in herself, and to be brave in the face of danger.
