ACT I – AT WITCH MARILYN’S HUT

(Chester and Edwin stand apprehensively outside the witch’s eerie hut. The moon casts long, haunting shadows.)

CHESTER: (nervously) This place gives me the creeps, Edwin.

EDWIN: (playfully) Are you sure you want to go through with this, Chester?

CHESTER: (determined) I have to. There’s no turning back now.

EDWIN: (raising an eyebrow) Well, we could always run away screaming.

CHESTER: (smirking) You know, you’ve always had a knack for timing, Edwin.

(Chester knocks on the door, which creaks open slowly. Witch Marilyn emerges with an unsettling grin.)

WITCH MARILYN: (sinisterly) Come in, boys. I’ve been expecting you.

(Chester and Edwin enter cautiously.)

CHESTER: (trying to sound brave) We’re not scared, you know. We’ve heard witches don’t eat children.

WITCH MARILYN: (chuckles darkly) Oh, but we do sometimes. (Pauses for effect) Just kidding… or am I?

CHESTER: (anxious) Do you have the magic potion, Witch Marilyn?

WITCH MARILYN: (mysteriously) If you have the gold, I have the secrets of the universe.

CHESTER: (nervously hands over the money) Here it is.

(Witch Marilyn takes the money with a greedy grin.)

WITCH MARILYN: (slyly) The potion, my dear.

(She fetches a bottle with an otherworldly, swirling purple liquid from a dark shelf and hands it to Chester.)

WITCH MARILYN: (whispering ominously) Remember, one small sip, only on the day of your greatest need. Understand?

CHESTER: (uncertain) I think so…

EDWIN: (inquisitive) Only on the day of…?

(Witch Marilyn interrupts, her laughter echoing through the hut.)

WITCH MARILYN: (wickedly) Yes, and its magic will last for mere hours… if you heed my instructions.

EDWIN: (earnestly) We’ll be careful, Witch Marilyn.

WITCH MARILYN: (gleefully) Now, be off before I decide to spice things up for dinner. (chuckles)

CHESTER: (nudges Edwin) Come on, Edwin, let’s make a swift exit.

EDWIN: (to Witch Marilyn) Thanks for your… hospitality.

(Chester and Edwin exit, leaving the hut as the door slowly creaks shut behind them.)

ACT II – IN SCHOOL

(The classroom is filled with students sitting at their desks, pencils in hand, preparing for a test. Miss Emma stands at her desk, looking serious.)

EDWIN: (whispering to Chester) You seem off today. Is everything okay?

CHESTER: (nervous) Not really, Edwin. I feel strange.

EDWIN: (concerned) What’s wrong?

CHESTER: (complaining) My body aches, my mouth’s parched, my head is pounding, and my heart is racing.

EDWIN: (worried) Maybe you’re just nervous. Did you even study?

CHESTER: (confident) Why bother? The magic potion will make me brilliant!

EDWIN: (skeptical) But what if it doesn’t work? You’ll fail the test!

CHESTER: (defiant) I won’t. That’s what the potion is for!

EDWIN: (frustrated) Did you at least follow the witch’s instructions and drink it properly?

CHESTER: (admitting) No, I drank it all.

EDWIN: (shocked) Are you out of your mind? No wonder you’re feeling sick!

CHESTER: Relax, Edwin. Nothing bad will happen, trust me.

EDWIN: I hope so.

MISS EMMA: (loudly) Silence, everyone! (Miss Emma stands in front of the class, commanding attention.) (authoritative) You have thirty minutes to complete your test.

EDWIN: (whispering to Chester) Good luck, Chester.

CHESTER: (overconfident) This time, I’ll ace it, you’ll see.

MISS EMMA: (firmly) You may begin your test now.

(Miss Emma sits at her desk as the students start working on their tests. Chester mumbles to himself in a low voice.)

CHESTER: (whispering) This test is a piece of cake. It’s like kindergarten stuff. (He glances at his classmates, who are struggling.) What’s taking them so long? I’ve already finished. That potion really works.

(Chester stands up confidently and walks over to Miss Emma with his completed test in hand.)

MISS EMMA: (surprised) Finished already? Let me take a look. (She examines the test, her eyes widening in disbelief. She looks at Chester worriedly.) Are you feeling okay? You look a bit pale.

CHESTER: (smiling smugly) I’m perfectly fine.

MISS EMMA: (perplexed) You may leave, Chester.

CHESTER: See you tomorrow, Miss Emma.

(Edwin stands up and hands in his test to Miss Emma.)

EDWIN: Wait up, Chester. Here’s my test. Goodbye, Miss Emma.

(They exit the classroom.)

ACT III – AT CHESTER’S HOUSE

(In Chester’s bedroom, Edwin sits at a desk, puzzled, holding the empty potion bottle. Chester is in the bathroom.)

EDWIN: (squinting at the bottle) These letters are tiny! (shouting) Chester, do you have a magnifying glass?

CHESTER: (shouting back) It’s in the left drawer!

(Edwin retrieves the magnifier from the drawer.)

EDWIN: (examining the bottle) Let’s see… (reading) “Drink me only as directed. Do not overdose me or you will become a…” (pauses) Oh my, God! (shouting) Chester, are you okay in there?

CHESTER: (worried) I don’t think so!

EDWIN: (shouting) I still can’t believe you drank it all.

(Chester emerges from the bathroom, his skin entirely purple.)

CHESTER: (frantic) I know!

EDWIN: (horrified) You’re… all purple! (Points to the bottle) It must have been the potion!

CHESTER: (panicking) It must be potent, but it did make me smarter!

EDWIN: (frustrated) Chester, you didn’t follow Witch Marilyn’s instructions, and you didn’t even read the label!

CHESTER: (confused, pointing at the label) What label? (realizes) Oh, that label!

EDWIN: (angry) Yes, that label!

CHESTER: Oops.

EDWIN: (examining Chester’s transformed appearance) Your hair is purple, your nose is purple, and your eyes are tiny.

CHESTER: (self-pitying) It’s all your fault!

EDWIN: (defensive) It’s not my fault! You didn’t follow her instructions, that’s all!

CHESTER: (guilt-ridden) I’m sorry. What do we do now?

EDWIN: (correcting) What you do now?

CHESTER: (concerned) I don’t know!

EDWIN: (reassuring) Well, just wait a few hours. Maybe you’ll be back to normal tomorrow.

CHESTER: (anxious) What if I’m not?

EDWIN: (encouraging) Don’t worry. The effect won’t last forever.

CHESTER: (realizing) Nor will my newfound intelligence, right?

EDWIN: (smirking) Right. So, next time…

CHESTER: (determined) I’ll study for the test.

EDWIN: (supportive) Yeah!

CHESTER: (sighing) Well, I’ll try to sleep. Maybe I’ll be myself again when I wake up.

EDWIN: (wishing him well) Good. See you tomorrow. And I hope your mother doesn’t see you like this.

CHESTER: (hopeful) I hope so, too.

EDWIN: (smirking) So long.

(Edwin exits. Chester lies in bed, and covers himself with a blanket.)

CHESTER: (whispering to himself) Next time, I’ll follow the instructions.

CREEPY VOICE: (mysterious) And read the label!

(Chester uncovers himself, startled.)

CHESTER: Who said that?

NARRATOR:  As our tale comes to a close, we are reminded that wisdom cannot be attained through shortcuts or easy solutions. Chester’s misadventures with the magic potion served as a poignant lesson for us all. In his pursuit of intelligence, he neglected the importance of hard work and diligence, only to learn that the pursuit of knowledge is a journey, not an instant fix.

So, let us remember that true intelligence is not measured by the contents of a potion but by the effort we put into our pursuits, the lessons we learn from our failures, and the wisdom we gain through experience. May Chester’s journey serve as a timeless reminder that the path to wisdom is paved with patience, perseverance, and the courage to face the consequences of our actions.
