THE ASRAI – DANGEROUS WATER FAIRY

It is a calm summer day. The boat ride on the sea is a lot of fun. The breeze caresses your face with its light and refreshing veil. After a while, the boat begins to move sideways, stronger and stronger, and in an instant, the waves that had been dormant rise ragingly as if obeying a supernatural force. Terrified, you realize that you are about to fall. So, you cling tightly to the sides of the boat, and looking out into the distance you see the lovely figure of a woman swimming rapidly towards you with her delicate arms outstretched. That vision and those threatening waves disappeared instantly, but when looking towards the bottom of the sea, she appears again carrying in one of his hands a large piece of gold, and in the other multiple necklaces full of pearls and precious stones. You know that you must not fall under her spell and that you must overcome the temptation to obtain those jewels. Otherwise, it would be your death sentence. So, you turn your back and head home.

The Asrai is a beautiful fairy from English folklore that lives in the sea, lakes, and rivers. It is a dangerous creature, but at the same time vulnerable.  She lives for hundreds of years and only comes to the surface of the water once every hundred years to bathe under the moonlight, which helps her to grow. Those who have seen her describe her as a very tall creature, shy, with greenish hair, and a large tail similar to that of a mermaid. She has the ability to control water and uses that ability to create huge bubbles to attract the attention of fishermen and any man who ventures to sail in her domain, and then draw them towards her. In addition, her skin is extremely cold and if touched it can cause serious burns to the skin of a human being.

One day, a fisherman was in the middle of the lake when suddenly this beautiful creature emerged from the deep waters. The woman told him that if he went down with her to the bottom of the water, she would make him a very rich man since she would give him a part of her treasure which consisted of gold and many jewels. The man knew that this was not her true intention, but to drown him as she had done with many others before. So, he decided to catch her and when trying to tie her up, the slight friction with her skin caused serious burns on his hands even though she was completely wet. Still, he laid her down in the boat and covered her with seaweed as she begged him for mercy. After a while, her cries became weaker and weaker until her voice was no longer heard. Finally, the boat reached the shore, and when the fisherman lifted the seaweed, all he found was a puddle of water. He did not know that she was like a mist, rising from the water and evaporating by continually being exposed to the sunlight. Unfortunately, the fisherman could not prove the existence of this being, but he was able to show the scars on his hands, which lasted all his life.

Deep under the water, there is a world that harbors mysterious creatures that can be hideous and aggressive, or benevolent and beautiful. For that reason, when you go out on a boat ride, you must proceed carefully to avoid being enchanted by the brightness of the treasures that this charming fairy carries in her hands.
