THE KAPRE’S TREE

The old tree at the edge of the village had always been a source of mystery and fascination for the local children. They would gather around it in the afternoons, telling stories and daring each other to get closer to the dark, gnarled trunk. But there was one story that everyone knew, a tale of a creature that lived within the tree and came out only at night. The creature was called Kapre, and it was said to be a fearsome being with powers beyond human comprehension.

One summer evening, a group of children decided to investigate the tree and see if they could catch a glimpse of the Kapre. They waited until the sun had set, then crept up to the tree, hearts pounding with excitement and fear. They huddled together, peering into the dark branches, but there was no sign of the creature. Just as they were about to give up and head back to their homes, they heard a low, rumbling laugh. They froze in place, staring up at the tree. Suddenly, a huge, dark figure emerged from the branches, with bright, glowing eyes and a large tobacco pipe in its mouth. It was Kapre.

The children tried to run, but they found themselves rooted to the spot. Kapre beckoned to them with a long, bony finger, and they could feel a strange, dizzying sensation wash over them. They knew they were in the grip of the creature’s powers, and they couldn’t break free.

But then, something unexpected happened. Kapre began to speak, in a deep, rumbling voice that seemed to come from deep within the earth. It spoke of the forest, and of the creatures that lived within it. It spoke of the balance of nature and of the importance of respecting the environment. The children listened, entranced. When Kapre was finished, it let out a roar and disappeared back into the tree, leaving the children in a state of wonder and awe.

From that night on, the children looked at the old tree with new eyes. They understood that it was more than just a source of fear and mystery, but a symbol of the interconnectedness of all living things. They promised to take care of the forest and its inhabitants, knowing that Kapre was watching over them.
