THE WISE MONKEY AND THE GREEDY BIRD

Once upon a time, a bird lived in one of the tallest trees in the forest. Every day before dawn, he went to the village market to feed on the seeds and pieces of bread that people spilled on the ground. Afterward, he would walk the streets as if he were a guardian. Then when he saw an open window in a room, he would enter silently and take whatever was within reach. For him, everything he could steal was a treasure. Then, the little thief took refuge in his nest and, feeling satisfied, slept peacefully until the next day.

One afternoon, he saw a monkey watching him from a nearby tree. Then, he proudly spread his wings and said: Come and visit me. I have many valuable things that I want to show you and that I have hidden. The monkey was curious about that sudden invitation and answered: Oh, I would love to see them! Next, he jumped and approached his nest. Look – said the bird – “in this chest, I have a pearl necklace, an emerald necklace, some gold coins, hair ties, a tie, a buckle, two medals, a comb, scissors, a rake, and a button. Do you like my treasure? Do you feel envy of everything I have? No one in this forest is as rich as me, and I can assure you that many would like to have what I have. The monkey looked at him in amazement, and after a few minutes, he added: “I have never seen such ridiculousness in my life!” You have put together nice things, I have no doubt about that, but I beat you, and don’t think I’m telling you out of envy.

From what I see, you only pile up old rags and pennies and brag about vain things that do you no good. On the other hand, I keep practical things. Look at my jaws and my mouth that opens and closes. Here I have what I need. My friend, I pile nuts, hazelnuts, sweets, and fruits and wisely choose the necessary provisions.
