THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST
The Wicked Witch is a fictional character in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum and published in 1900. In the story, she is short, has an eyepatch, is scruffy, has a magical umbrella that she uses as a cane, and wears a pointy golden hat that allows her to control an army of flying monkeys. On the other hand, in the movie The Wizard of Oz, released in the United States on August 25, 1939, she is called the “Wicked Witch of the West.” She is the main antagonist, her skin is green, and she carries a broom, a long black dress with a black pointed hat.
IN THE FILM:
– She is the sister of the Wicked Witch of the East who accidentally dies when Dorothy arrives in Oz.
– When she appears to claim her dead sister’s ruby shoes, Glinda (the Good Witch of the North) magically transfers them to Dorothy’s feet. Glinda tells Dorothy never to take them off, as the shoes must have power or the witch wouldn’t want them as much.
– She wishes to take revenge on Dorothy for killing his sister.
– All she cares about is getting the magical ruby shoes (in the novel, they were silver) to become more powerful to conquer Oz.
– She cannot kill Dorothy because she is protected by the kiss of the Good Witch of the North, so she enslaves her.
– She is the wicked ruler of the land of the Winkies and treats them as slaves
– She has a crystal ball through which she can see what is happening in other places.
– She has a broom that she flies on occasionally.
– She melts to death when Dorothy accidentally throws a bucket of water at her while trying to extinguish the fire consuming the Scarecrow
