NARRATOR: Once upon a time there were a brother and a sister who were unhappy because of their step-mother.  One day the little brother told his little sister.

LITTLE BROTHER: Since our mother passed away we have had no happiness, and our step-mother doesn´t like us. Our meals are the hard crusts of bread that are left over, If our mother only knew!. Come, we will go forth together into the wide world.

NARRATOR: So they ran away.  They walked the whole day over fields, and stony places; and when it rained the little sister said.

LITTLE SISTER: Heaven and our hearts are crying together.

NARRATOR: In the evening they came to a large forest.

LITTLE BROTHER: I`m so tired and hungry!.

LITTLE SISTER: I know, but just think about it.  We are free!.

LITTLE BROTHER:  You`re right!.  She will never scream at us, right?.

LITTLE SISTER: Yes, we are very far away from her now.  Now, we have to see where are we going to stay.

NARRATOR: Then, they sat down in a hollow tree and fell asleep. The next day when they awoke, the sun was already high in the sky, and shone down hot into the tree.

LITTLE BROTHER: Sister, I am thirsty; if I knew of a little brook I would go and just take a drink; I think I hear one running.

NARRATOR: So they set off to find the brook. But they didn`t know that the forest was enchanted, and that their wicked step-mother was in reality a witch, and had seen how the two children had gone away, and had bewitched all the brooks in the forest.

WITCH: A spell I cast on this water, ha, ha, ha. When you drink the water from me a tiger will be!. Ha, ha, ha, ha.

LITTLE BROTHER: Look, there`s a brook down there.

NARRATOR: The little brother was going to drink out of it, but his sister heard how it said as it ran.

RIVER: Who drinks of me will be a tiger; who drinks of me will be a tiger.

LITTLE SISTER: No, dear brother, do not drink, or you will become an animal.

LITTLE BROTHER: That`s not funny.

LITTLE SISTER: No, I really heard the water say it.

LITTLE BROTHER: I can`t hear anything.  I just hear the water.

LITTLE SISTER: No, we are in an enchanted part of the forest.  I heard:  Who drinks of me a fierce tiger will be.

LITTLE BROTHER: I don´t believe you!.

NARRATOR: But the brother did not drink, although he was so thirsty.

LITTLE BROTHER: I will wait for the next spring.

NARRATOR: So they continue their way.  When they came to the next brook the sister heard this also say.

RIVER: Who drinks of me will be a wolf; who drinks of me will be a wolf.

LITTLE SISTER: Wait, dear brother, do not drink, or you will become a wolf, and eat me up.  And what will happen the, we will not have each other.

LITTLE BROTHER: But I didn`r hear anything!  I am thirsty, I will drink anyway.

LITTLE SISTER: Your´re selfish!.

LITTLE BROTHER: That`s not true.

LITTLE SISTER: Please, brother.  We need each other.

LITTLE BROTHER: You`re right.  I will wait until we come to the next spring, but then I will drink, say what you like. I am really thirsty.

NARRATOR: They moved on, even though they were hungry and thirsty.  After a long walk, they came to the third brook the little sister heard the brook say.

RIVER: My water is cool, who drinks of me will be a deer; who drinks of me will be a deer.

LITTLE BROTHER: Water, water, water, water

NARRATOR: The little brother started running towards the brook.

LITTLE SISTER: No, brother, stop, come back!.   Oh, dear do not drink, or you will become a deer!.

NARRATOR: But the brother had knelt down at once by the brook, and had bent down and drunk some of the water, and as soon as the first drops touched his lips he turned into a young deer.

LITTLE SISTER: Oh, my poor little brother.

LITTLE BROTHER (AS A DEER):  I´m sorry, I was selfish.

LITTLE SISTER: Don´t worry, we`ll find a place to live outside this enchanted place. I will never, never leave you.

NARRATOR: Then she untied her golden garter and put it around the deer`s neck, and they walked deeper and deeper into the forest. After a long walk tey came to a little house.

LITTLE GIRL: We can stay here and live.

NARRATOR: Then she looked for leaves  to make a soft bed for the deer; and every morning she went out and gathered roots and berries and nuts for herself, and brought grass for the deer, who ate out of her hand, and was happy and played round about her.   Time passed quietly in the forest until one day the young King  held a great hunt in the forest.  The King saw the deer standing in the forest and said.

KING: Look over there, that young deer can be our supper for tonight.

NARRATOR: But they could not catch him, and when they thought that they surely had him, away he ran through the bushes and could not be seen. When it was dark he ran to the cottage, knocked, and said:

LITTLE BROTHER: Open the door. I am home let me in.

NARRATOR: The little sister opened the door.  He jumped in, and went to sleep. The next day the deer again heard the noise and screams of the huntsmen, and said.

LITTLE BROTHER: Sister, let me out, I must be go out again.

LITTLE SISTER: But you must be here again in the evening.

NARRATOR: When the King and his huntsmen again saw the young deer, they chased him, but he was too quick for them. Finally, in the evening the huntsmen surrounded him, and one of them wounded him a little in the foot, so he ran slowly. Then a hunter followed him to the cottage and saw him knock at the door.

LITTLE BROTHER: My little sister, let me in.

NARRATOR: The hunter saw that someone opened the door, and then closed it. The huntsman  went to the King and told him what he had seen and heard. Then the King said.

KING: Tomorrow we will go hunting again.

NARRATOR: Meanwhile, the little sister, washed him.

LITTLE SISTER: Go to your bed, and rest.

NARRATOR: Next morning, the deer felt so good that he decided to go out again.

LITTLE BROTHER: I have to go out, I can`t stay here.

LITTLE SISTER: This time they will catch you, and here I will be alone in the forest.   I will not let you out.

LITTLE BROTHER: Then I will be sad.

NARRATOR: Then the little sister opened the door, and the deer, full of health and joy, went  into the forest.   When the King saw him, he said to his huntsmen.

KING: Now chase him all day long till nightfall, but take care that no one does him any harm.

NARRATOR: As soon as the sun had set, the King said to the huntsman.

KING: Now come and show me the cottage in the wood.

NARRATOR: When he was at the door, he knocked and said.

KING: Dear little sister, let me in.

NARRATOR: Then the door opened, and the King walked in, and there stood a girl  more lovely than any he had ever seen.

LITTLE SISTER: Who are you?.

NARRATOR: The King looked kindly at her, stretched out his hand, and said

KING: Will you go with me to my palace and be my dear wife?.

LITTLE SISTER: Yes, indeed.   But the little deer must go with me, I cannot leave him.

KING: He can stay with you as long as you live.

NARRATOR: At that moment the deer came running in and they went away with the King from the cottage to the palace where they got married and lived  for a long time happily together. But when the wicked step-mother, heard that they were so happy, thought of nothing but how she could bring them again to misfortune. Her own daughter, who was ugly, and had only one eye, grumbled to her and said.

WITCH´S DAUGHTER: A Queen!.  I was the one who was supposed to marry the king.

WITCH: Be quiet, when the time comes I will be ready.

NARRATOR: One day, the Queen had a pretty little boy.  That day the king  was not in the palace because he had gone out hunting, so the old witch took the form of the chamber-maid, went into the room where the Queen was resting, and said.

WITCH: Come the bath is ready.  It will do you good, and give you strength.

NARRATOR: The witch`s ugly daughter also was close by; so they carried the weak Queen into the bathroom, and put her into the bath.

WITCH: Now, I will make her dissappear with a magic spell.

NARRATOR: Then they closed the door,

WITCH: Dear Daughter, quickly, put this nightcap on your head and get in bed  in place of the Queen.

NARRATOR: The witch gave her the shape and look of the Queen, but could not make good the lost eye.

WITCH: Now lie on the side on which you have no eye, so the king can not see you.

NARRATOR: In the evening when the king came home and heard that he had a son, he was very happy and went to see how her dear wife was, but the witch, disguised as a maid said.

WITCH: For your life leave the curtains closed. The Queen must not see the light yet, and must have rest.

KING: Yes, I´ll leave the room.

NARRATOR: And so the king did not find out that a false Queen was lying in the bed. At midnight, the nurse, who was sitting in the nursery by the cradle, and who was the only person awake, saw the door open and the true Queen walk in. She took the child out of the cradle and laid it on her arm, put the child down again and covered it with a little quilt.  Then went into the corner where the deer was and stroked its back. Then she went quite silently out of the door again. The next morning the nurse asked the guards.

NURSE: Did someone come into the palace during the night?.

GUARDS: No, we didn´t see anybody.

NARRATOR: The true Queen came many nights, and never spoke a word; the nurse always saw her, but she did not dare to tell anyone about it.   After a long time, the Queen began to speak in the night, and said.

LITTLE SISTER: How are you child, how are you my deer?,  I will come twice, then never more.

NARRATOR: The nurse did not answer, but when the Queen had gone again, went to the King and told him all.

KING: Ah, heavens!.  What is this?. Tomorrow night I will stay near the child.

NARRATOR: In the evening he went into the nursery, and at midnight the Queen again appeared and said.

LITTLE SISTER: How are you my child, how are you my deer?. Once I will come, then never more.

NARRATOR: And she nursed the child and then she disappeared. The King could not speak to her, but on the next night he watched again. The she said.

LITTLE SISTER: How are you my child, how are you my deer?. Today I come, then never more.

KING: You are my dear wife.

LITTLE SISTER: Yes, I am your dear wife.

NARRATOR: At that moment she received life again.

LITTLE SISTER: It was a spell from the wicked witch.  She and her daughter are guilty.

KING: They will be taken to the judge.

NARRATOR: And judgment was made.

JUDGE: You, daughter of this evil witch, will be taken into the forest.

WITCH`S DAUGHTER: Noo, the animals will eat me!.

NARRATOR: The witch was left in the forest and was never seen again, and the deer changed into the little boy.

LITTLE BROTHER: Oh, I have a human form again!.

LITTLE SISTER: Yes, my dear brother, now we will live  happily together all our lives.
