THE GRINDYLOW – THE DEMON SIREN OF BRITISH FOLKLORE

“Don’t go too far,” his parents told their little son as they walked along a path near a lake. The boy didn’t listen and ran quickly towards the water’s edge, and as he bent down to see his reflection, long arms suddenly came out of there and grabbed him hard. The little boy tried to scream, but the creature rapidly dragged him to the bottom of the lake, where he disappeared.

The Grindylow is a mythological creature from English folklore and is known as a water spirit or demon siren. The legend says that it lives in the murky waters of swamps, lakes, rivers, coastal regions, and near coral reefs in the British Isles. It often takes refuge in seaweed and on the hulls of abandoned shipwrecks. People who have seen this terrible monster, have declared that he is a scavenger and an expert hunter who eats any animal that is near him, but his favorite food is children. For that reason, he hides among the vegetation waiting for unsuspecting children who dare to venture near his habitat. Then, it grabs them tightly with its long arms and drags them to the bottom of the water, slowly drowning them to eat them later.

This supernatural creature has brown or very pale skin. Its upper body is humanoid in shape, its arms are long with delicate fingers, and its teeth are small and pointed. Some of these evil entities are small and have horns, for that reason they are considered a terribly aggressive and destructive demons.

It is believed that this legendary creature arose to scare children to stay away from rivers, lakes, and swamps because of the fear that parents had that they would fall into the water and drown, especially if they did not know how to swim. However, for many of those parents, this belief that emerged from the depths of the water became their worst nightmare, when they saw with their own eyes how their children could not escape the violent hands of the Grindylow.
