(Rabbit hops in the forest.  He sees a silver coin on the ground and picks it up)

Rabbit: This is my lucky day!   What should I buy? Hmmm… I have to think… I can’t buy a piece of bread… or candies… or cookies… because if I do, I will eat them and then I will have nothing… no food, and no money.  Let me see… what can I do?

(He keeps thinking)

Rabbit: I know what to do!  I’ll buy a guitar!

(He puts the silver coin in his pocket and walks to the store.)

Clerk: Hello Mr. Rabbit!  Are you looking for something special?

Rabbit: Yes!  I want to buy a guitar.

Clerk: A guitar?  I didn’t know you could play the guitar.

Rabbit: Oh, yes I do… yes, sir!

(The clerk takes a guitar and gives it to the rabbit)

Clerk: This is the best one I have… but I must tell you… it’s very expensive.

(Rabbit takes the guitar.  He takes out the silver coin from his pocket and gives it to the clerk)

Clerk: Where did you get this? … Oh, never mind.  Enjoy your new guitar!

(The clerk puts the silver coin in his pocket)

Rabbit: Thank you, I will.

(Rabbit leaves the store.  He walks to the forest.  He sits on a rock and starts to play the guitar.  A squirrel, a hare, a deer, a skunk and a fox approach him)

Squirrel: Oh, what a beautiful song!

Hare: Shhh, be quiet!

Deer: Rabbit, where did you get the guitar?

Fox: I didn’t know you could play the guitar.

(Rabbit stops playing the guitar)

Rabbit: Did you like it?

Fox: Yes, we all did.

Skunk: Rabbit, did you know that I can also play the guitar?  Let me show you… give me your guitar.

Rabbit: No… sorry, but I won’t.

Skunk: Why not?

Rabbit: Because you can steal it from me.

Skunk: Steal it from you?   Why would I?

Rabbit: Because you might like it so much, that probably you will not give it back to me.

Skunk: You hurt my feelings, Rabbit.  But I swear I will not steal it from you.

Rabbit: Very well… but just for a few minutes.

(Rabbit gives the guitar to the Skunk.  Skunk starts playing the guitar)

Deer: Not bad… not bad.

Squirrel: What’s the name of that song?

Hare: It’s called I Did It My Way.

Rabbit: Yeah, yeah, whatever you say…. it’s enough… give it to me now.

Skunk: Just let me play one more song.

Rabbit: I have to go.  Give it to me, Skunk.

Skunk: No, I will not give it back to you.

Rabbit: What!

Skunk: You gave it to me… don’t you remember?

Rabbit: That is not true!  I never gave you my guitar!

Skunk: Yes, you did… you told me to keep it.

Deer: You’re lying, Skunk.

Hare: Give it to him.

(Rabbit cries)

Squirrel: Don’t cry, Rabbit… soon you will have your guitar…

Fox: Right… Skunk?

Skunk: No!  I want to keep playing the guitar.  Where should I sit?

(Squirrel, Deer, Hare, and  Fox look at each other and smile)

Hare: That is a good place to sit, Skunk.

Skunk: Where?

Fox: Over there.. look!

Skunk: You’re right.

(Skunk sits on the ground near an ant house.  He starts to play the guitar)

Deer: You play so beautifully!

(Some ants start to bite Skunk)

Skunk: Take the guitar, Fox!

Fox: What’s wrong?

Skunk: No!  No!  I hate ants!

(Skunks rolls on the ground frantically.  He stands up and runs away)

Squirrel, Hare, Deer, Skunk,  Fox: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha… Good bye, Skunk!

(Fox gives the guitar to Rabbit)

Fox: Play another song, please, Rabbit.

Rabbit: Sure, my friends!

(Rabbit plays the guitar. Squirrel, Hare, Deer, and Fox clap)

Scene I

(The old man, the cat, and the rooster are inside the hut in the forest. The old man opens the door.)

Old Man: I’m going to work.  Don’t open to door to strangers.

Cat and Rooster: We won’t.  Have a good day.

(The old man leaves.  The cat sees the  old man’s lunch box on the table)

Cat: Oh, no… not again!

Rooster: What’s wrong?

Cat: He forgot his lunch.

Rooster: He’s getting older.

Cat: I know.   I’ll see if I can catch him.

Rooster: Hurry up!

(The cat takes the lunch box and leaves. The rooster lies on the sofa.  The fox is outside the house looking through the window, and starts to sing)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn.

(The roosters stands up and opens the window.  The fox grabs the rooster. The cat enters)

Rooster: Help me cat… Help me!

Cat: Leave him alone!

(The fox drops the rooster and leaves.  The cat closes the window)

Cat: Be careful, rooster.  Don’t open the window… remember what the old man said…don’t listen to the fox, she wants to eat you.

Rooster: I’m sorry… it won’t happen again.

Cat: The old man asked me to buy some milk, so I’m going to the grocery store.  Remember what I told you.

Rooster: I’ll be fine… don’t worry about me.

(The cat leaves.  The rooster lies on the sofa. The fox once again looks through the window and starts to sing)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.

(The rooster stands up and walks throughout the room)

Rooster: What should I do?  I’m really hungry!

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.

(The fox throws a piece of bread through the window.  The rooster eats the bread)

Fox: Get closer to the window.

Rooster: I don’t trust you fox… you want to eat me.

Fox: That is not true.  I just want you to come to my house.  I want you to meet my family…. my beautiful daughters.

(The fox starts to sing)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.

(The rooster opens the window.  The fox grabs the rooster.  The cat enters)

Rooster: Help me cat… Help me!

Cat: Leave him alone!

(The fox drops the rooster and leaves.  The cat closes the window)

Cat: I told you not to open the window!  One of these days the fox will eat you.  You have to be careful because I might not be here on time to save your life.

Rooster: It won’t happen again… I promise.

Cat: Let’s not tell the old man what happened here today.

Rooster: I agree with you.

(The old man enters)

Old Man: I’m back.  Was everything ok while I was gone?

Cat and Rooster: Yes, sir.  Everything was just fine.

Old Man: Good.  I’m going to bed, I’m really tired… see you tomorrow.

Rooster: I’m really tired, too.

Cat: Me too.

(The old man, the cat and the rooster leave)

Scene II

(The rooster lies in the sofa.  He hears the fox singing outside the window)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.  Beautiful rooster… open the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.  Beautiful rooster, answer me.

Rooster: No, fox.  I don’t trust you anymore.  I won’t open the window.

Fox: Beautiful golden rooster, open the window!  I have a big, big palace with plenty of corn, seeds and bread.  Oh, I also have so many candies… you will eat all you want!  Don’t trust the cat, I will not eat you.  I love you and I want you to come with me.  Don’t be afraid.  Open the window.

Rooster: No!  No!  No!

Fox: I am so sad.  Anyway, good bye rooster… you will never see me again, I promise.

(The fox hides under the window.  The rooster opens the window.  The fox grabs the rooster)

Rooster: Help me Cat!  Help me!

Fox: Ha, ha, ha, ha…now you are mine!  Ha, ha, ha, ha.

(The fox and the rooster leave.  The cat enters with a bottle of milk)

Cat: Rooster!  Where are you?  I’m back.

(The cat sees the window opened)

Cat: Oh no!  That evil fox took the rooster!

(The cat  leaves the milk on the table, takes a wood cane and leaves)

Scene III

(The cat is outside the fox’s hut. The fox and her two daughters, Sweet and Melody, are in the living room.  The Rooster is tied to a chair)

Melody: When are you going to cook the rooster, mother?

Fox: Tomorrow morning… the sooner, the better.

Sweet: Mmmm… it looks so delicious!

Melody: Where did you get it?

Fox: It’s a long story.

(The cat starts to sing)

Cat: You’re so beautiful Sweet…. You’re so lovely Melody.  Oh, I love you soooo.

Mrs. Fox: Did you hear that?

Sweet: Who could it be?

Mrs. Fox: Go outside and see who’s singing that beautiful song.

(Sweet goes outside and approaches the cat.  The cat hits her on the head with the wood cane and hides her behind a tree.  He starts to sing again)

Cat: You’re so beautiful and lovely Melody…. Oh, I love you soooo.

Mrs. Fox: Go on, he’s calling you, Melody!

Melody: Are you sure I should go, mother?

Mrs. Fox: Sure, why not.  He’s waiting for you… he says he loves you!

Melody: But, mother… I don’t know who he is.

Mrs. Fox: Who cares!  It’s your last chance… you will never get married!

Melody: Maybe you’re right.

(Melody goes outside and approaches the cat)

Melody: Where’s my sister?

Cat: Over there, behind the tree.

Melody: What is she doing there?

Cat: She went to pick up some flowers.

Melody: Flowers?  On this time time of the year?

Cat: Yes… follow me… by the way, you are so beautiful!

Melody: Really?

Cat: Of course.  I never lie.

(Melody follows the cat.  She sees her sister Sweet lying on the floor)

Melody: Sweet!

(The cat hits her on the head with the wood cane.  Melody falls to the floor)

Cat: Now … it’s your turn fox!

(The cat returns to the hut and starts to sing)

Cat: Mrs. Fox… Mrs. Fox… you’re so beautiful.  Oh, I love you… Oh, I love you.

Fox: Oh, that is the most beautiful song I have ever heard!

Cat: Mrs. Fox…. Mrs. Fox…. Come and see me… Oh, I love you…. Oh, I love you.

Fox: Oh… he wants to see me!  I must go!

(The cat hides behind the door.  The fox goes outside.  The cat hits her on the head with the wood cane.  The fox falls to the floor.  The cat enters the hut and sees the rooster tied to a chair)

Cat: Rooster!

Rooster: Oh… cat!  You came to save me!  Thank you!

(The cat unties the rooster)

Cat: Let’s go home… I just hope you learned your lesson.

Rooster: I’m sorry… it won’t happen again… I promise!

(They leave)

(A cat walks in the forest.  He sees a fox sleeping under a tree)

Cat: Good day, Mrs. Fox.  How are you on this beautiful and sunny day?

(The fox opens her eyes)

Fox: Mmmm…. can’t you see that I’m sleeping?

Cat: Oh, I’m sorry… but as soon as I saw you I thought to myself… Oh, she’s so intelligent and so clever… everybody loves her!

(The fox stands up and looks at the cat from bottom to top)

Fox: Ha, ha, ha, ha… I didn’t know you had a brain.  Go away… hunt mice… that’s the only thing you can do.

Cat: Oh, no, I can do a lot more things than that.  But you haven’t answer my question.

Fox: Why should I?  In fact… I shouldn’t be talking to you!   You’re nobody!  You know nothing!  You’re useless!  You don’t even have a life!  Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Cat: You’re wrong.  I have a talent.

Fox: A talent?  Ha, ha, ha, ha….  Yeah, sure… tell me more about it.

Cat: Well, when I see a bunch of dogs, I can climb up the trees and save my life.

Fox: Is that all?

Cat: Yes… what about you?

Fox: Well, I have a bag of tricks, and I really feel sorry for you.  Come with me, I’ll show you how to get rid of the dogs.

(They hear some dogs barking)

Cat: Wait a minute…did you hear that?

Fox: Don’t tell me you’re afraid of those barking dogs?

(The cat climbs a tree)

Cat: Sure I am!

Fox: Ha, ha, ha, ha.  Now I can see your talent in action!

Cat: Come on, Mrs. Fox,  What are you going to do…open up your bag of tricks!   Hurry up…  they are almost here!

(Some dogs approach.  They grab and take the fox away)

Fox: No!  No!  Cat… do something!

Cat: Sorry… I can only hunt mice!  Remember?

(The dogs and the fox leave)

Cat: Oh, Mrs. Fox, your bag of tricks was empty!

Scene I -  In the Jungle

(All the animals are having a meeting.)

Giraffe: Dear friends…  we need to solve our “Lion” problem.

Rhinoceros: How?

Zebra: I’m getting tired of him!

Deer: He really scares me!

Giraffe: Me too.  He’s becoming terrible every day… that’s why we need to do something!

Moose: He’s always hungry.

Rhinoceros: I wonder who will be his supper tonight?

Giraffe: I think he is just hunting for pleasure.

Fox: This forest is not what it used to be… someone must talk to him.

(There is silence)

Zebra: Why don’t you talk to him, Fox?

Giraffe: Good idea!

Rhinoceros:You are very intelligent!

Fox: I know, that’s why I can’t talk to him!

Moose: Why not?

Fox: The Lion knows that I’m very intelligent , and if I talk to him, he might feel offended and he may get more furious…. somebody else must do it!

(There is silence.  A small  Rabbit sitting at the back raises his hand.  The Giraffe can hardly see him)

Giraffe: Who’s that on the back?

(The Rabbit timidly speaks in a low voice)

Rabbit: It’s me… the Rabbit.

Moose: Oh, it’s you…sit down.  The meeting is not over.

Deer: Let him speak… he wants to say something.

Rabbit: I think I can solve the problem… I will go and talk to the Lion.

(All the animals laugh)

Deer: You’re too small.

Rhinoceros: And you’re a rabbit!

Rabbit: So what?  I am a rabbit… the fox is a fox… and the lion is a lion.

(The Giraffe looks at the other animals)

Giraffe: Hmmm… what do you all think?

Deer: I don’t want to go.

Zebra: Neither do I.

Moose: My family needs me.

Rhinoceros: I haven’t been feeling very good lately.

Giraffe: Enough blah, blah, blah!… we have decided to let you go.

(The Fox pushes the Rabbit)

Fox: Hurry up, you will find him in his cave right now.

Rabbit: I’ll see you later.

All the Animals: Good luck!

(The Rabbit leaves)

All the Animals: Poor Rabbit.

Scene II – In the Lion’s Cave

(The rabbit enters the cave walking slowly.  He is trembling.  The lion roars)

Rabbit: Good day, Mr. Lion.

Lion: Ha, ha, ha… look who’s here… a tiny, little, insignificant rabbit!  Are you afraid of me?  Is that why you are trembling?

Rabbit: No, no, Mr. Lion…I’m not scared of you.

Lion: You are not scared of me?

Rabbit: No, in fact, I’m glad that I found a place to hide.

Lion: Who are you hiding from?  From me?  Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Rabbit: No, Mr. Lion…. I’m hiding from the other Lion.

Lion: What other lion?

Rabbit: The other lion there is in the jungle.

Lion: In my jungle?

Rabbit: Yes!  Haven’t you seen him?

Lion: No! There is no other lion!  I’m the only one!

Rabbit: No, Mr. Lion… you are wrong.

Lion: Then, take me to this other lion!  I must see him with my own eyes.

Rabbit: I will, but I must warn you… he’s bigger than you!

Lion: I don’t care!

Rabbit: Very well… but don’t eat me, please.

Lion: Oh, come on… how could I… if you are taking me to see this other lion.

Rabbit: Good… follow me.

(They leave)

Scene II -  In the Jungle

(The Rabbit and the Lion walk in the jungle.  The rabbit suddenly stops)

Rabbit: We are getting closer.

Lion: Where is he?

(The Rabbits points to a well)

Rabbit: Do you see that big well over there?

Lion: Yes.

Rabbit: That’s where he lives.  Please, be careful.

Lion: I’ll get rid of him.

(The lion looks inside the well.  He sees his own reflection in the water and roars.  He hears the echo.)

Lion: I’m the king of the jungle!

(The lion hears the echo and gets furious.  He gets into the well and drowns.  The rabbit looks inside the well)

Rabbit: I knew I would solve the problem.

Narrator: Once upon a time there was a farmer who had a loyal horse, but it was too old to work.  One day, the horse said.

Horse: I am hungry… you haven`t feed me in two days.

Farmer: How do you expect me to feed you, if you don´t work anymore?

Horse: You know I am old, I have worked for you for many years.

Farmer: I know… and I love you.. but you have to show me that you are still strong.

Horse: How can I prove to you that I am still strong?

Farmer: If you bring me a lion, I will take care of you.  But for now, get out of my stable.

Horse: Where am I going to live?

Farmer: That is your problem…  go away!

Narrator: The horse left the farm, and went into the forest where he looked for protection from the weather.

Horse: Oh, I am so sad!  What am I going to do? Where am I going to live?  What am I going to eat?

Narrator: Then he saw a fox.

Fox: What is wrong with you?  Why are you so sad? What are you doing all alone in this forest?

Horse: Oh, poor me!… greed and loyalty can´t live in the same house.

Fox: What do you mean?

Horse: I have work hard for my master for many years, and he has forgotten all the work I did.

Fox: What did he do to you?

Horse: I am old, and I can no longer push the wheel and plow well, so he told me that he doesn´t want to feed me anymore, and he threw me out of the farm.

Fox: Without giving you a chance?

Horse: Well, he said that if I were still strong enough to bring him a lion, he would keep me, but he well knows that I cannot do that.

Fox: That´s not fair!… anyway… I am going to help you.

Horse: How can you help me?

Fox: Just lie down, stretch out as if you were dead, and do not move.

Horse: I´ll do what you say.  I have nothing to loose.

Fox: Good!  Now you have to wait for a few minutes, I am going to look for the lion.

Horse: Are you sure?

Fox: Yes, I am.  I´ll be right back!

Narrator: The fox went to look for the lion, whose cave was not far away.

Fox: Lion!  Lion!

Lion: What do you want?  Don´t you see that I am taking a nap?

Fox: I have good news to you!  I found a dead horse!  Come with me, and you can have a rich meal!

Lion: Let´s go!

Narrator: The lion went with the fox, and when they where standing by the horse the fox said.

Fox: After all, it is not very comfortable for you here…I´ll tell you what — I will fasten it to you by the tail, and then you can drag it into your cave and eat it in peace.

Lion: Good idea!

Narrator: Then the lion lied down very quietly so the fox could tie the horse to his tail. But the fox tied the lion’s legs together with the horse’s tail, and twisted and fastened everything so well and and strongly that no amount of strength could pull it loose. When he had finished his work, he tapped the horse on the shoulder and said.

Fox: Pull, white horse, pull!

Narrator: Then the horse stood up at once, and took the lion away with him.

Lion: Let me go!  Let me go!

Narrator: Then the  lion began to roar and roar that all the birds in the forest flew up in terror, but the horse let him roar, and drew him and dragged him across the field to the farm. When the farmer saw him, he was surprised.

Farmer: Oh!

Horse: I brought you the lion.  Are you pleased?

Farmer: Sure, I am!  You will stay here with me, and you will eat the best food I have.

Narrator: And he gave him plenty to eat until he died.

Narrator: Once upon a time there was a very arrogant fox.  She had a shiny and furry tail and bright eyes.  One day she decided to visit her cousin who lived in a near village.  She put on her pink hat and started to walk.

Fox: What a lovely day!  Oh, yes!

Narrator: She kept walking, but after a while she was tired and thirsty.

Fox: Oh, It’s hot!  And I’m getting tired… I wish there was some water to drink.

Narrator: She walked, and walked, and she was getting thirstier, and thirstier.

Fox: I’m thirsty and hungry… I wish I had something to eat… but there isn’t anything on the road.  And I still have a long way to walk… Oh, my… I should have stayed home.

Narrator: Suddenly she looked up and saw a vineyard full of ripe grapes.

Fox: Those grapes look sweet and juicy… they look so delicious.  Oh, those are the most beautiful grapes I have ever seen… I have to eat some!

Narrator: She tried to get them.  So she jumped upwards but she could not reach the grapes. She jumped again as high as she could. She still could not reach them. The grapes were just too high for her.  She couldn’t even touch them.

Fox: Hmmm, now that I think about it… I am sure that those grapes are not ripe.

Narrator: But she kept looking at the grapes.

Fox: I must be dreaming… this not true…  I am not going to look at those grapes anymore.  They are sour… even tough they look so sweet and juicy….

Narrator: The fox wanted to leave, but she couldn’t take her eyes off the grapes.

Fox: They are sour!  Yes they are!  They are not sweet!  No they are not!   Why would I want them anyway?  I better leave… it was a mistake trying to get them… I’m just wasting my time.

Narrator: And the fox walked away.  Maybe she didn’t believe what she was saying, but what else could she do?

Fox: How about tomorrow night at seven?

Stork: Sounds good for me. See you tomorrow.

Fox: See you… and be on time!

Stork: I will!

Narrator: Next day the Stork arrived on time at the Fox`s house.

Fox: Hello! Come and sit down… dinner is ready.

Stork: Tell me…what did you cook?

Fox: I cooked a delicious soup…I`m sure you will like it!

Narrator: But when the Stork sat down at the table, the fox served the soup in a very shallow dish.

Fox: What`s wrong?

Stork: It`s just that I can`t eat it with my long beak.

Fox: Oh, really? Well at least you can wet the end of your long bill in it, right?

Stork: Well… yes, but… never mind…anyway I hope you will return this visit, and come and dine with me soon.

Fox: Of course I will.

Stork: How about tomorrow night?

Fox: I`ll be there!

Narrator: So that night the Stork went home hungry. Next day the Fox showed up on time at the Stork´s home.

Stork: Come in, my good friend… I was expecting you.

Fox: What did you cook?

Stork: Since you are my special host, I cooked your favorite food… a delicious soup!

Fox: Oh, really?

Stork: Sure… come and sit down… dinner is served.

Narrator: But the Fox was surprised to see that the soup was served in a very long-necked jar with a narrow mouth.

Fox: The soup indeed looks delicious, but my good friend… I can`t even insert my snout in this jar!

Stork: Oh, really? Well at least you can lick the outside of the jar, right?

Fox: Well… yes… but… never mind.

Stork: Listen, my good friend, I am not sorry to say this… but one bad turn deserves another.

Narrator: The fox jumped upon the wagon while the men were not looking.

Fox: It´s time to throw out some of the best fish. Today I will have a very good dinner.

Narrator: Then Mr. Fox jumped from the wagon and began to eat the fish.

Fox: This fish is deliciouss. It´s the best I have ever tried! I think I will do this more often.

Narrator: While he was eating the fish, Mr. Bear came along.

Bear: Good morning, you have had good luck fishing today. Those are very fine fish. How did you catch them?

Fox: They are fine fish. If you will go fishing with me to-night, I will show you how to catch even better fish than these.

Bear: I will go with you gladly. I will bring my hook and line too.

Fox: You don’t need a hook and line. I always catch fish with my tail. You have a much longer tail than I, and can fish so much the better.

Narrator: At sunset the bear met the fox. They went across the frozen river until they came to a small hole in the ice.

Fox: Now, Mr. Bear. sit down here on the ice and put your tail through the hole. You must keep still for a long while. That is the best way to catch fish. Wait until a great many fish take hold of your tail. Then pull with all your might.

Narrator: The bear sat very still for a long time. At last he began to feel cold and he moved a little.

Bear: Ow! My tail is frozen! It is not time to pull out the fish?

Fox: No, no. Wait until more fish have taken hold of your tail. You are very strong. You can wait a little longer.

Narrator: So the poor bear waited until it was almost morning. Just then some dogs began to bark on the bank of the river.

Bear: I hear some dogs barking and they are coming this way. I have to pull out my tail.

Narrator: But he pulled and pulled.

Bear: Oh no, my tail is frozen. Uff! I have to pull harder!

Narrator: So he pulled and pulled until at length the tail was broken short off.

Bear: Oh no, my tail!

Fox: Ha, ha, ha ! This is so funny!

Bear: Don´t laugh! You tricked me, this is all your fault!

Fox: Oops! Ha, ha, ha , I have to get away before he gets me!

Narrator: And the Fox ran away laughing and laughing at the trick he had played on Mr. Bear. Bears’ tails have been short ever since.

SCRIPT:

Narrator: There was once a Fox who built herself a hut and lived there as snug as you please. But winter came, it was cold in the hut, and so off the Fox ran to the village to get a light for her stove. She came to an Old Woman’s house.

Fox: It´s early morning, Grandma! Please, give me a light, and I will do as much for you some day.

Old Woman: Very well, Sister Fox, sit down and warm up while I take my poppy-seed cakes out of the oven.

Fox: Very well, I´ll wait for you here.

Old Woman: Someone is calling me, let me put the cakes on the table to cool.

Narrator: When the old woman left the room the Fox took one look at them, and, snatching up a cake went out running and went to hide in the woods.

Fox: Wow! This poppy-seed filling is delicious! Now I will stuff the cake with straw, cover it with the crust and it´s ready again!

Narrator: She ran and she ran till she saw two shepherd boys taking a herd of cows to water.

Fox: Good morning, my friends!

Shepherds: Good morning to you, Sister Fox!

Fox: Let’s trade! You give me a young bull and I’ll give you this poppy-seed cake.

Shepherds: Very well.

Fox: But don’t eat the cake till I leave the village.

Narrator: So the Fox gave the shepherds the cake in return for a young bull, She made off with the bull for the forest.

Shepherds: Let´s eat the cake.

Narrator: And the shepherds began to eat the cake.

Shepherds: The Fox stuffed the cake with straw!

Narrator: Sister Fox came to her hut and she cut down a tree and made herself a sledge. She harnessed the bull-calf to the sledge and went driving along, and the she found Brother Wolf.

Wolf: Good morning, Sister Fox!

Fox: Good morning to you, Brother wolf!

Wolf: Where did you get the sledge and the little bull?

Fox: I made them.

Wolf: Let me ride with you a little way, Sister Fox!

Fox: How can I do that? You’ll break my sledge.

Wolf: No, I won’t. I’ll just put one of my legs on it.

Fox: Oh, very well.

Narrator: So the Fox and the Wolf went driving along together, and then the Wolf said.

Wolf: I think I’ll put my second leg on the sledge, Sister Fox.

Fox: Don’t, you’ll break the sledge, Brother Wolf.

Wolf: No, I won’t.

Fox: Well, go ahead, then!

Narrator: So the Wolf put another leg on the sledge, and he and the Fox went driving along again when suddenly there came a great c-r-rack!

Fox: Hey there, you’re breaking my sledge, Brother Wolf!

Wolf: No, I’m not, Sister Fox, I was only cracking a nut.

Fox: Oh, well, if that was all!

Narrator: So the two of them went driving along again, and then the Wolf said.

Wolf: I think I’ll put my third leg on the sledge now, Sister Fox.

Fox: Don’t be silly! You’ll break the sledge, and then what will I have to carry my firewood on?

Wolf: I won’t break it, never you fear!

Fox: Oh, very well, then.

Narrator: So the Wolf put his third leg on the sledge, and something went cr-r-ack! – again.

Fox: Dear me! You’d better go away, Brother Wolf, or you will break my sledge!

Wolf: No, Sister Fox, I was only cracking a nut.

Fox: Give me one!

Wolf: I haven’t any more. That was the last.

Narrator: They went driving along again, and then the Wolf said.

Wolf: I think I’ll climb into your sledge now, Sister Fox.

Fox: Don´t do it, Brother Wolf, you’ll break the sledge!

Wolf: No, I won’t. I’ll be careful.

Fox: Well, see that you are!

Narrator: So the Wolf climbed into the sledge and of course it broke under him and fell to pieces!

Fox: I told you!  You broke the sledge! Go and cut down a tree, you bad so-and-so, and chop it up into logs, enough to keep my house warm and to make a new sledge too, and then drag the logs here!

Wolf: How will I do that? I don’t know which tree you want.

Fox: You knew how to break my sledge, but when it comes to chopping down a tree, you pretend you don’t know how to do it.  As soon as you come to the forest you must say: “Fall down, tree, crooked and straight! Fall down, tree, crooked and straight!

Narrator: Off the Wolf went, he came to the forest and said.

Wolf: Fall down, tree, crooked and crooked! Fall down, tree, crooked and crooked!

Narrator: The tree fell and the logs were so twisted and knobby that not even a stick could be made out of them.  So the Wolf took the logs to the Fox, and the Fox took one look at them and got angry.

Fox: You must have said the wrong words!

Wolf: Oh no, Sister Fox!  I said: Fall down, tree, crooked and crooked!

Fox: I knew it!  Sit here, and I’ll go and chop down a tree myself.

Narrator: And off the Fox went. There sat the wolf, and by and by he began to grow very hungry. He looked all over the Fox’s hut but found nothing. He thought and he thought and said to himself.

Wolf: I think I’ll eat the little bull and run away.

Narrator: He made a hole in the bull’s side, ate up his insides, stuffed the bull full of sparrows, sealed the whole with a handful of straw and  ran away.  After a while, the Fox came back, made herself a beautiful new sledge, climbed in and called.

Fox: Giddy-up, little bull!

Narrator: But the bull-calf never stirred from the spot. Then the Fox took up a stick and she gave the bull such a blow that the handful of straw fell from his side, and the sparrows flew out with a wh-o-o-sh!

Fox: You wicked, wicked Wolf! You wait, I’ll pay you back for this!

Narrator: And off she went. She stretched herself out on the road and lay there very quietly. Then some fishermen came driving up with a wagon caravan loaded with fish. The Fox lay there without stirring and pretended to be dead. The men looked and were much surprised.

Fishermen: Let’s take the Fox and sell it, brothers.  We ought to be able to get enough money for it to buy some food.

Narrator: They threw the Fox into the last wagon and drove on.

Fox: Those men aren´t looking this way, I better hurry up and throw the fish out onto the road.

Narrator: Then, leaving the cart only half full, she climbed down herself. The men drove on, and the Fox gathered up the fish, sat down and began to eat. Then the Wolf came running up.

Wolf: Hello there, Sister Fox!.

Fox: Hello to you, Brother Wolf!

Wolf: What are you doing, Sister Fox?

Fox: Eating fish.

Wolf: Give me some!

Fox: Go catch them yourself.

Wolf: I can’t, I don’t know how to do it!

Fox: Well, that’s your business, you won’t get as much as a bone from me.

Wolf: Won’t you at least tell me how to do it?

Fox: (thinking) You wait, Little Brother! You ate my little bull and now I’ll pay you back for it!

Narrator: Then she said to the Wolf.

Fox: Go to the river, dip your tail into an ice hole. Move it slowly back and forth and say: ‘Come and be caught, fish, big and small!’ That way you’ll catch all the fish you want.

Wolf: Thank you for telling me.

Narrator: He ran to the river, dipped his tail into an ice hole, moved it slowly, back and forth and said.

Wolf: Come and be caught, fish big and small!

Narrator: And the Fox looked out at him through the reeds on the bank and said.

Fox: Freeze, freeze, Wolf’s tail!

Narrator: There was bitter frost out, and the Wolf kept moving his tail back and forth and saying.

Wolf: Come and be caught, fish, big and small!

Fox: Freeze, freeze, Wolf’s tail!

Narrator: There the Wolf stayed catching fish till his tail was frozen fast to the ice, and when that happened the Fox ran to the village and cried.

Fox: Come, good people, and get rid of the Wolf!

Narrator: And the villagers came running and caught the Wolf.

Fox: Thanks good men, now everybody will live in peace in the village.

Narrator: One hot sunny day, a thirsty fox was walking in the woods, when he saw a well, and when trying to look inside, he fell in.

Fox: Oh, this well is very deep  How will I get out again? … I can´t jump very high.  All I wanted was some water, but not this much!

Narrator: At that moment, a thirsty goat was passing by and heard a noise coming from the well.

Goat: What are you doing down there, fox?  Did you lose something?

Fox: No, goat, I just wanted to drink some water. I was so thirsty, and this water is so refreshing.  Come down here and taste it for yourself!

Goat: Really?

Narrator: Goat jumped down into the well.

Goat: You were right!  This water is so sweet and fresh… but, how are we going to get out from here?

Fox: Well, the top of the well is high, but if you stand still I can climb on your back and jump to the top.  As soon as I am out, I will help you to get out too.

Narrator: So goat stood still, fox climbed out, and looked down at the goat.

Fox: Thanks for your help goat.  See you soon!

Goat: Fox…don´t leave me here!  How am I going to get out?

Fox: You should have thought about that before going into the well.  Remember what they say, ¨look before you leap¨. Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Narrator: And the fox ran away.
