Scene I – At the Mouse’s House

(The Mouse sweeps outside her house.  She sees a coin on the floor)

Little Mouse: What´s that on the floor?

(She picks up a gold coin)

Little Mouse: Oh, it´s a gold coin! mmm…. I’ll buy some candies… mmm, better not… my teeth will hurt.  I´ll buy a cake …. no, my stomach will hurt and I will get fat… I´ll buy a red hair bow … Yes!  I’ll do just that…I will look so beautiful… everybody will want to marry me!

(She leaves)

Scene II – At the Store

Clerk: How may I help you?

Mouse: I want the most beautiful hair bow you have!

Clerk: What color?

Mouse: I want it red!

(The clerk gives the mouse a red hair bow.  The Mouse puts is on her head)

Clerk:  You look beautiful!

Mouse: I know!

(A Rooster enters )

Rooster:  Oh… your are the most beautiful mouse I have ever seen…will you marry me?

Little Mouse: I don´t know… I don´t know.  What noise do you make at night?

Rooster: Cluck, cluck, bwak, cluck, cluck, bwak

Little Mouse: Oh no!  I will not marry you.  I don´t like the noise you make.

Rooster: Well, you’re not the most beautiful mouse… anyway!

(The rooster leaves.  A dog enters)

Dog: Little mouse… you look so beautiful with that red bow!   Will you marry me?

Little Mouse: I don´t know… I don´t know.  What noise do you make at night?

Dog: Warf, warf, warf

Little Mouse: Oh no!  I will not marry you… you scare me.

Dog:  Wait till you see the cat!

(The dog leaves.  A  pig enters).

Pig: Little mouse… the Rooster and the Dog told me you look beautiful today.   Will you marry me?

Little Mouse: I don´t know… I don´t know.  What noise do you make at night?

Pig: Oink, oink

Little Mouse: Oh no!  I will not marry you.  You make an ordinary noise.

Pig: I thought you were going to say that!

(The Pig leaves.  A white Cat enters)

Cat: Little Mouse… you are so beautiful. Will you marry me?

Little Mouse: I don´t know… I don´t know.  What noise do you make at night?

Cat: Meow, meow

Little Mouse: No!  You will scare me.

Cat: I don’t want to scare you little mouse…. I want to eat you!

(The cat tries to grab the mouse)

Little Mouse: Go away!

Clerk: Get out of my store!

(The Cat leaves.  A Mouse enters)

Mouse: Oh, you are the most beautiful mouse I have ever seen… !    Will you marry me?

Little Mouse: I don’t know… I don’t know… What will you do at night?

Mouse: I’ll sleep and be quiet… I’ll sleep and be quiet.

Little Mouse: Yes!…  I will marry you!

(They hug)

Scene I

(The old man, the cat, and the rooster are inside the hut in the forest. The old man opens the door.)

Old Man: I’m going to work.  Don’t open to door to strangers.

Cat and Rooster: We won’t.  Have a good day.

(The old man leaves.  The cat sees the  old man’s lunch box on the table)

Cat: Oh, no… not again!

Rooster: What’s wrong?

Cat: He forgot his lunch.

Rooster: He’s getting older.

Cat: I know.   I’ll see if I can catch him.

Rooster: Hurry up!

(The cat takes the lunch box and leaves. The rooster lies on the sofa.  The fox is outside the house looking through the window, and starts to sing)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn.

(The roosters stands up and opens the window.  The fox grabs the rooster. The cat enters)

Rooster: Help me cat… Help me!

Cat: Leave him alone!

(The fox drops the rooster and leaves.  The cat closes the window)

Cat: Be careful, rooster.  Don’t open the window… remember what the old man said…don’t listen to the fox, she wants to eat you.

Rooster: I’m sorry… it won’t happen again.

Cat: The old man asked me to buy some milk, so I’m going to the grocery store.  Remember what I told you.

Rooster: I’ll be fine… don’t worry about me.

(The cat leaves.  The rooster lies on the sofa. The fox once again looks through the window and starts to sing)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.

(The rooster stands up and walks throughout the room)

Rooster: What should I do?  I’m really hungry!

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.

(The fox throws a piece of bread through the window.  The rooster eats the bread)

Fox: Get closer to the window.

Rooster: I don’t trust you fox… you want to eat me.

Fox: That is not true.  I just want you to come to my house.  I want you to meet my family…. my beautiful daughters.

(The fox starts to sing)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.

(The rooster opens the window.  The fox grabs the rooster.  The cat enters)

Rooster: Help me cat… Help me!

Cat: Leave him alone!

(The fox drops the rooster and leaves.  The cat closes the window)

Cat: I told you not to open the window!  One of these days the fox will eat you.  You have to be careful because I might not be here on time to save your life.

Rooster: It won’t happen again… I promise.

Cat: Let’s not tell the old man what happened here today.

Rooster: I agree with you.

(The old man enters)

Old Man: I’m back.  Was everything ok while I was gone?

Cat and Rooster: Yes, sir.  Everything was just fine.

Old Man: Good.  I’m going to bed, I’m really tired… see you tomorrow.

Rooster: I’m really tired, too.

Cat: Me too.

(The old man, the cat and the rooster leave)

Scene II

(The rooster lies in the sofa.  He hears the fox singing outside the window)

Fox: Beautiful rooster… come out the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.  Beautiful rooster… open the window… I’ll give you a delicious corn and some bread.  Beautiful rooster, answer me.

Rooster: No, fox.  I don’t trust you anymore.  I won’t open the window.

Fox: Beautiful golden rooster, open the window!  I have a big, big palace with plenty of corn, seeds and bread.  Oh, I also have so many candies… you will eat all you want!  Don’t trust the cat, I will not eat you.  I love you and I want you to come with me.  Don’t be afraid.  Open the window.

Rooster: No!  No!  No!

Fox: I am so sad.  Anyway, good bye rooster… you will never see me again, I promise.

(The fox hides under the window.  The rooster opens the window.  The fox grabs the rooster)

Rooster: Help me Cat!  Help me!

Fox: Ha, ha, ha, ha…now you are mine!  Ha, ha, ha, ha.

(The fox and the rooster leave.  The cat enters with a bottle of milk)

Cat: Rooster!  Where are you?  I’m back.

(The cat sees the window opened)

Cat: Oh no!  That evil fox took the rooster!

(The cat  leaves the milk on the table, takes a wood cane and leaves)

Scene III

(The cat is outside the fox’s hut. The fox and her two daughters, Sweet and Melody, are in the living room.  The Rooster is tied to a chair)

Melody: When are you going to cook the rooster, mother?

Fox: Tomorrow morning… the sooner, the better.

Sweet: Mmmm… it looks so delicious!

Melody: Where did you get it?

Fox: It’s a long story.

(The cat starts to sing)

Cat: You’re so beautiful Sweet…. You’re so lovely Melody.  Oh, I love you soooo.

Mrs. Fox: Did you hear that?

Sweet: Who could it be?

Mrs. Fox: Go outside and see who’s singing that beautiful song.

(Sweet goes outside and approaches the cat.  The cat hits her on the head with the wood cane and hides her behind a tree.  He starts to sing again)

Cat: You’re so beautiful and lovely Melody…. Oh, I love you soooo.

Mrs. Fox: Go on, he’s calling you, Melody!

Melody: Are you sure I should go, mother?

Mrs. Fox: Sure, why not.  He’s waiting for you… he says he loves you!

Melody: But, mother… I don’t know who he is.

Mrs. Fox: Who cares!  It’s your last chance… you will never get married!

Melody: Maybe you’re right.

(Melody goes outside and approaches the cat)

Melody: Where’s my sister?

Cat: Over there, behind the tree.

Melody: What is she doing there?

Cat: She went to pick up some flowers.

Melody: Flowers?  On this time time of the year?

Cat: Yes… follow me… by the way, you are so beautiful!

Melody: Really?

Cat: Of course.  I never lie.

(Melody follows the cat.  She sees her sister Sweet lying on the floor)

Melody: Sweet!

(The cat hits her on the head with the wood cane.  Melody falls to the floor)

Cat: Now … it’s your turn fox!

(The cat returns to the hut and starts to sing)

Cat: Mrs. Fox… Mrs. Fox… you’re so beautiful.  Oh, I love you… Oh, I love you.

Fox: Oh, that is the most beautiful song I have ever heard!

Cat: Mrs. Fox…. Mrs. Fox…. Come and see me… Oh, I love you…. Oh, I love you.

Fox: Oh… he wants to see me!  I must go!

(The cat hides behind the door.  The fox goes outside.  The cat hits her on the head with the wood cane.  The fox falls to the floor.  The cat enters the hut and sees the rooster tied to a chair)

Cat: Rooster!

Rooster: Oh… cat!  You came to save me!  Thank you!

(The cat unties the rooster)

Cat: Let’s go home… I just hope you learned your lesson.

Rooster: I’m sorry… it won’t happen again… I promise!

(They leave)

(A cat walks in the forest.  He sees a fox sleeping under a tree)

Cat: Good day, Mrs. Fox.  How are you on this beautiful and sunny day?

(The fox opens her eyes)

Fox: Mmmm…. can’t you see that I’m sleeping?

Cat: Oh, I’m sorry… but as soon as I saw you I thought to myself… Oh, she’s so intelligent and so clever… everybody loves her!

(The fox stands up and looks at the cat from bottom to top)

Fox: Ha, ha, ha, ha… I didn’t know you had a brain.  Go away… hunt mice… that’s the only thing you can do.

Cat: Oh, no, I can do a lot more things than that.  But you haven’t answer my question.

Fox: Why should I?  In fact… I shouldn’t be talking to you!   You’re nobody!  You know nothing!  You’re useless!  You don’t even have a life!  Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Cat: You’re wrong.  I have a talent.

Fox: A talent?  Ha, ha, ha, ha….  Yeah, sure… tell me more about it.

Cat: Well, when I see a bunch of dogs, I can climb up the trees and save my life.

Fox: Is that all?

Cat: Yes… what about you?

Fox: Well, I have a bag of tricks, and I really feel sorry for you.  Come with me, I’ll show you how to get rid of the dogs.

(They hear some dogs barking)

Cat: Wait a minute…did you hear that?

Fox: Don’t tell me you’re afraid of those barking dogs?

(The cat climbs a tree)

Cat: Sure I am!

Fox: Ha, ha, ha, ha.  Now I can see your talent in action!

Cat: Come on, Mrs. Fox,  What are you going to do…open up your bag of tricks!   Hurry up…  they are almost here!

(Some dogs approach.  They grab and take the fox away)

Fox: No!  No!  Cat… do something!

Cat: Sorry… I can only hunt mice!  Remember?

(The dogs and the fox leave)

Cat: Oh, Mrs. Fox, your bag of tricks was empty!

(There`s a table in the center of the room. A mouse sits behind the table.  Some mice are standing and talking at the same time.  There are  chairs in the room).

Chairman: Quiet in the room!  We are about to start our meeting. (mice sit). Today we will talk about the cat.  What do you have to say?

(A mouse stands up)

Mouse 1: We would be happy if it weren`t for him!

Chairman: We already know that!.

Mouse 2: I hate that cat!

Chairman: The point is… that he scares us.

Mouse 3: We can`t go on like this anymore!

Mouse 4: We don`t have a life!

Mouse 5: We can never eat, that’s why I’m always hungry!

Mouse 6: He is so quiet. We never know when he`s approaching.

(All the mice talk at the same time.  One mouse interrupts the conversation).

Mouse 7: I know what we can do!  At home I have a small bell.

Mouse 8: So?

Mouse 7: So I was thinking that next time we see him taking his nap, we can attach the bell to his neck.

Mouse 9: Oh, I get!  That way, when he comes to get us we will hear the sound of the bell.

Mouse 10: And we will be able to escape on time.

(All the mice clap and they hug and kiss each other.  The chairman looks at an old mouse who sits on the back of the room)

Chairman: How come you are not happy like us?

Old Mouse: It`s not a bad idea…but before I celebrate I have to know something.

Chairman: What is it?

Old Mouse: Who will attach the bell to the cat`s neck?

(There is silence in the room.  The cat enters and all the mice run around the room)

Chairman: The cat!  The meeting is over!

(The cat chases the mice out of the room)

(Mary is  in the front door of her house waiting for her 6 chicks. She has her purse and the house keys in her hand)

Mary: Are you ready?

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep

Mary: Let’s go!

(Mary and her chicks go out.  She closes the door and they start to walk)

Mary: Come on.. hurry up… it’s a beautiful day!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep

Mary: Today we will go to the river!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep,cheep, cheep.

(they walk toward the river.  Mary sees Mr. Cat lying under a tree)

Mary: Good morning, Mr. Cat.

Mr. Cat: Good morning, dear Mary.

Mary: It’s a beautiful morning!  We are going to the river… would you like to come with us?

Mr. Cat: No, thank you, I am very tired.

Mary: As you like… have a nice day.

Mr. Cat: Good-bye.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(Mary goes to Mrs. Duck´s house. she knocks at the door)

Mrs. Duck: Who is it?

Mary: It’s me, Mary!

Mrs. Duck: Come in… the door is open.

(Mary and her chicks enter the house. Mrs. Duck is sitting on the sofa)

Mary: Mrs. Duck… would you like to come with us to the river?

Mrs. Duck: No, thank you, my dear friend Mary.  It’s a cold day… I prefer to stay here.

Mary: No problem… we will go alone… come on my little babies.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(Mary and her chicks leave the house. They go to the river)

Mary: This is a wonderful place for you to play!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(the chicks play for a while.  They get tired)

Mary: Now go to the river and drink some fresh water.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(the chicks go the river and drink water)

Mary: Come here… it’s time to read a short story.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(Mary takes out a story book from her purse and starts reading)

Mary: Once upon a time there was a little cat who lived in the…

(she looks at her watch)

Mary: Oh, my!  It’s late and you have to go to school!  Let’s go back to the farm!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(they go back to their house)

Mary: Hurry up! …  pick up your backpacks!

(The chicks take their backpacks and they go out.  Mary closes the door with the keys and they walk toward school.  In her hurry, Mary drops the keys).

Mary: Oh… I can’t waste anymore time!

(she bends down to pick up the keys.   She sees some wheat grains on the ground.  She picks up the grains).

Mary: Oh!  This is wonderful!  Today is my lucky day!  I will plant them right now! … but first I have to take my babies to school!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(she takes the chicks to school.  Afterwards she goes to see Mr. Cat who is lying under the tree)

Mary: Mr. Cat!  Mr. Cat!

Mr. Cat: Mmmm…yes?

Mary: Look what I found?

Mr. Cat: What is it?

Mary: I found these wheat grains!… would you like to help me plant them?

Mr. Cat: Not right now… I am tired!

Mary: Very well…Maybe Mrs. Duck will help me.

(she goes to Mrs. Duck´s house.  She knocks at the door)

Mrs. Duck: Who is it?

Mary: It’s me, Mary!

Mrs. Duck: Come in… the door is open.

(Mary enters the house.  Mrs. Duck is sitting on the sofa)

Mary: Mrs. Duck!  Look!  I just found these wheat grains… and I was thinking that maybe you would like to help me plant them.

Mrs. Duck: Oh!  I already told you that I am cold… I prefer to stay here!

Mary: Sorry, Mrs. Duck.

Mrs. Duck: Good-bye.

(she goes to her house and plants them in her backyard.  Her chicks come back from school).

Mary: Come to see where I planted the wheat grains!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(she takes them outside.  She shows them the place where the grain is planted)

Mary: All we have to do is water the grains every day!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(they water the grains .  She cuts the wheat)

Mary: Now, I´ll take the wheat to the mill!…. come on, my babies let’s ask my neighbors to help me.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(she finds Mr. Cat lying under a tree)

Mary: Mr. Cat!  Mr. Cat!

Mr. Cat: What can I do for you?

Mary: I have to take the wheat to the mill, will you help me ?

Mr. Cat: Oh, My dear Mary…  I can’t go with you because I´m very tired.  Go yourself!

(she leaves very sad.)

Mary: Maybe Mrs. Duck will help me.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(she goes to Mrs. Duck´s  house.  She knocks at the door)

Mrs. Duck: Who is it?

Mary: It’s me, Mary!

Mrs. Duck: Come in… the door is open.

(Mary and her chicks enter the house. Mrs. Duck is sits on the sofa)

Mary: Mrs. Duck would you like to go with me to the mill?

Mrs. Duck: Oh, dear, Mary… it’s very cold.  I prefer to stay here.  Maybe some other time.

Mary: Good-bye.  Come on, my babies, let’s go to the mill.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(Mary and her chicks leave the house and they go the the mill.  They go back to their house with a bag of flour and she bakes the bread. When the bread is cooked she takes a piece of it in her hand)

Mary: This bread is delicious!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

Mary: Now we will go to see Mr. Cat and Mrs. Duck.

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(Mr. Cat is lying under a tree)

Mary: Mr. Cat!  Mr. Cat!

Mr. Cat: Now what, Mary?

Mary: Would you like to eat some of this delicious bread?

Mr. Cat: Oh, yes!  yes!  Mary!  Sure I would!

Mary: Oh…No!  No!  because when I needed your help you didn’t help me!  So, only my chicks and I will eat the bread!  Good-bye!

Chicks: Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep.

(Mary and her chicks go to Mrs. Duck´s house.  She knocks at the door)

Mrs. Duck: Who is it?

Mary: It’s me, Mary!

SCRIPT:

Narrator: It was a hot day in the forest, and Alice, a little and happy girl, started to get tired of being seated near her sister who was reading a book under a tree.

Alice: How can my sister be reading a book without any pictures? … Oh, if it weren´t so hot I would be making a daisy chain.

Narrator: Then suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.  The Rabbit said to itself.

White Rabbit: Oh dear! Oh dear! Time is out, I will be late!

Narrator: Alice was surprised, then she saw how the Rabbit took out a watch from his waistcoat pocket, and looked at it, and then ran away.  Alice stood up quickly.

Alice: A Rabbit with a waistcoat and a watch!  I have to catch it!

Narrator: Alice ran across the field after it, she was about to catch it, when the little animal went inside a large rabbit-hole under the hedge, and said.

White Rabbit: I can´t be late!

Narrator: Alice followed the Rabbit and went inside. The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down.

Alice: I am falling down through a very deep well… but I am falling very slowly!  It´s strange, the sides of the well are filled with cupboards and bool-shelves, and there are pictures and maps!  … Over there… there´s a jar of strawberry jam… mmmmm, I´ll eat it!  Oh, it´s empty! …  I´ll put it on the lower cupboard, because if I throw it away I can hurt somebody.  When will this well come to and end!  I may have fallen miles and miles!.

Narrator: Suddenly the little girl, fell into a pile of dry leaves without getting hurt.  Alice stood up, and there was another long passage, and there was the White Rabbit still running.

White Rabbit: Oh my ears and whiskers, now I am really late!

Narrator: Once again the little girl was about to catch it, when the Rabbit turned to a corner, and disappeared.  Alice was in a great low room, very well lit up, and surrounded by doors of different sizes.  She tried to opened them.

Alice: All the doors are locked!  How am I going to get out of here?… I should have brought my little cat, that way I wouldn´t feel so lonely! …. Over there, in the middle of the room there´s a glass table… but where did it come from?  … a few minutes ago it wasn´t there… I am sure of that! .  Over the table there´s a tiny golden key…  mmmm, it´s too small, it doesn´t open any door!

Narrator: However, on the second time round, Alice saw behind a curtain, a very tiny door, she tried the little golden key in the lock, and to her great delight, the door opened. The door  led into a small narrow passage.  She knelt down and looked along the passage, the loveliest garden she had ever seen.

Alice: Oh, I want to go to that garden!  … but how could I?  I will never fit through the little door.  Oh, if I could shut up like a telescope, then I could surely go to that garden. I´ll see if over the table I can find another key…. Oh, well… there´s no other key!  … but, what is this little bottle?  It wasn´t here before!  … it´s says in the label, DRINK ME. I´ll see it it doesn´t say poison.  No, nothing indicates it´s poison, I´ll taste it… mmmm, I like it, I´ll drink the whole bottle… I feel strange…. I am getting smaller, just like a telescope.

Narrator: She was now only ten inches high.  Then she went to the little door, hoping to get out to the garden.  But, poor Alice, the door was locked, and she forgot the key over the table.  She tried to get it by climbing up one of the legs of the table, but since it was made of glass, it was too slippery.  Then she sat down on the floor, and cried.

Alice: I am behaving like a fool.  There´s no use in crying!… but… under the table there´s a little box!.

Narrator: Alice opened the little box, and said.

Alice: It has a small cake that says EAT ME!… well, I´ll eat it… something marvelous has to happen.  I have learned that in this place, everything is marvelous.

Narrator: She ate a little bite, but she noticed there was no difference, so she kept eating until she finished the whole cake.  Then…

Alice: I am getting bigger!  Good-bye dear feet!  You are almost out of sight, so far off!  When I want to change my shoes, I will have to send them with a messenger with a note that says:  This shoes are a gift from Alice to her own feet.   Oh, what nonsense I´m  thinking! …  What´s worse, is that I keep growing!… Oh!  I hurt my head with the roof! I am more that nine feet high!  I am a big girl!   But now I can take the key.

Narrator: Poor big girl.  But the only thing she could do was to lie down on the floor, and look through the door into the garden with one eye.  Then she began to cry again.

Alice: I should be ashamed of myself!  It´s not right that a great girl like me, cries like a baby.

Narrator: But she kept crying and crying, until there was a large pool of tears all around her.  Then she heard some footsteps, and at last she stopped crying.  There it was, the White Rabbit, very splendidly dressed, with a pair of white gloves in one hand, and a fan in the other.

White Rabbit: Oh! by this time the Duchess must be savage!  I can´t keep her waiting anymore!

Alice: Mr. Rabbit!  Mr. Rabbit!  Wait Please!  Just a moment!  Listen to me!

Narrator: When the Rabbit heard Alice, it got scared and  dropped the white gloves and the fan, and ran away as fast as it could.  Alice picked up the gloves and the fan, and since it was hot, she fanned herself, and said.

Alice: What a day!   Yesterday everything was so normal… Oh, I am getting smaller again!  I wonder why!  Maybe it´s the fan!

Narrator: She dropped the fan just when she was about to disappeared.

Alice: Now I can go to the garden!… but what´s this?…I have fallen into salt water.

Narrator: The salt water was her own pool of tears she had wept when she was nine feet high.

Alice: I wish I hadn´t cried so much!

Narrator: She started to swim when she heard something splashing in the pool.

Alice: Someone is swimming! … Oh, it´s a hippopotamus!  No, it´s a walrus!  Oh, it´s a mouse!  But since now I am small, I see it huge!  I will talk to the mouse, maybe it can answer me!

Narrator: So she said.

Alice: Tell me, mouse, do you know the way out of this pool?

Narrator: The mouse looked at her, but it didn´t answer.  Alice thought that maybe the mouse didn´t understand English, so she said the only thing she could remember in French.

Alice: Ou est ma chatte?

Narrator: Which means where is my cat?  Suddenly, the Mouse got out of the water.

Alice: Oh, please forgive me!  I forgot mice don´t  like cats.

Mouse: Look little girl!  I have my own reasons to dislike cats, someday I will tell you my story, and then you will understand how I feel.  But let´s swim to the shore.  Look!  We have company.  The pool is full of creatures!

Alice: It´s true!  It´s a parrot, a duck, and eagle, and many more!

Narrator: Alice swam near the little animals.  After a while they were on shore.

Alice: We are all wet!

Mouse: I agree with you!  What do you think, parrot?

Parrot: I think we should have a race-course.

Alice: A race course?  What´s that?

Parrot: You don´t know?  Look, it´s a sort of circle, but the shape doesn’t really.  When I say ready, everybody will start running.  Ready!  Go!

Narrator: Everybody started running, and half an hour later, the parrot said.

Parrot: Everybody is dry!  The race is over!

Mouse: Who won?

Parrot: Everybody has won!  All of you have to receive a prize.

Duck: Who will give the prizes?

Eagle: Yes, who?

Parrot: The little girl, obviously!

Narrator: Alice didn´t know what to do.  She put her hand in her pocket and pulled out a box of candies, and handed them round as prizes.  There was exactly one a-piece all round.

Mouse: What about her?  Isn´t she going to receive a prize?

Parrot: Of course she is!  Let´s see Alice, what else do you have in your other pocket?

Alice: Let me see… only a thimble.

Parrot: Give it to me…  Please accept this elegant thimble, as a prize.

Narrator: They all cheered.  Alice thought that everything was so strange, but when she saw their faces so grave, she didn´t dare to laugh, so she just said.

Alice: It´s an honor for me to accept this beautiful prize.  My thimble was just what I needed.  Dear Mouse, you promised to tell me your story, I will he glad to hear it.

Mouse: I must tell you, that my story is very sad and long as my tail.

Alice: Your tail is long.

Narrator: The girl was looking at the mouse´s tail, but she didn´t know why was it sad. Alice didn´t pay attention to the mouse´s story, so when the mouse finished talking, he said.

Mouse: Little girl, you are not paying attention.  What are you thinking of?  I have a knot in my throat!

Alice: A knot!  Oh, let me help you undo it!  I always undo the ribbon my cat has in her neck.

Mouse: Young lady, you insult me and offend me!

Alice: You always get offended!

Mouse: You need more education!   I am leaving!

Alice: He´s gone!  Now can I talk with the parrot and the birds, about Dinah, my cat.

Parrot: Who´s Dinah?

Alice: Dinah is my little cat.  She´s good at catching mice and birds!  Oh, I wish you could see her after the birds!  She eats them as soon as she looks at them!

Parrot: Let´s go friends, we can´t talk with this girl.  That´s why the mouse left.  Follow me!

Alice: Please, don´t leave me alone!….  they are gone!  I should have never talked about Dinah!  In this strange country nobody likes cats… Someone is coming… maybe it´s the mouse who changed his mind… but no… It´s the White Rabbit!

White Rabbit: The Duchess! The Duchess!  Oh my fur and whiskers! She’ll get me executed, as sure as two plus two are eight!  Where did I leave the gloves?

Narrator: The Rabbit was looking for the gloves and the fan.  Alice, wishing to help, began looking for them.  But everything was changed since she was swimming in the pool.  Like magic, the room had vanished completely.  At last, the Rabbit noticed Alice, and said.

White Rabbit: Mary Ann, what ARE you doing out here? Run home this moment, and bring me another  pair of gloves and a fan! Quick, now!

Narrator: Alice was so frightened that she ran off at once in the direction it pointed to, without trying to explain the mistake it had made.

Alice: He took me for his housemaid, but I’d better take him his fan and gloves… that is, if I can find them.

Narrator: As she said this, she came upon a very beautiful little house, on the door of which was a bright brass plate with the name  White R engraved upon it

Alice: White R?  Maybe it means White Rabbit.  I will go in… I hope I don´t find the real Mary Ann.  Anyway it´s funny!  I am the messenger of a rabbit!  Oh, how lucky I am, over the table there is a pair of gloves and a fan!…  and a little bottle!  I will drink it, and I hope I can grow large again, I am getting tired of being so small.

Narrator: In fact, as soon as she drank the little bottle, she grew so fast that she had to take an arm out of the window, and a leg up the chimney.  Fortunately, the little magic bottle had now no effect. Still it was very uncomfortable, and, since there was no chance of getting out of the room again, she started crying.  After a while she heard a voice outside.

White Rabbit: Mary Ann! Mary Ann!  Answer me!  Where are my pair of gloves? Can´t you hear me?  What is going on!  The door is not opening.  Mary Ann, tell me why you locked the door?  Answer me!  Very good, then I´ll go in through the window.

Narrator: The rabbit was just under the window, when Alice opened her hand, and made a snatch in the air, but she didn´t catch anything.  Then there was a crash of broken glass, and the rabbit shouted.

Rabbit: Oh!

Narrator: Next, the Rabbit with an angry voice, said.

White Rabbit: Pat! Pat! Where are you?  Pat!  Pat!

Pat: Here I am, digging for apples.

White Rabbit: Come and help me get out of here!…  tell me what you see in the window.

Pat: I see an arm, your honor.

White Rabbit: What do you mean, an arm?  Who has ever seen an arm that big?

Pat: Well, I insist, it´s an arm.

White Rabbit: Then, why is an arm there?  Take it away!

Pat: I am scared of the arm.

White Rabbit: Don´t be a coward!  Then go down through the chimney! I order you to do it!

Pat: Very well, I will go down the chimney.

Alice: Oh,  I will kick him.

Narrator: Alice kicked Pat so hard, that he flew through the air.  Then she heard animal voices.

Animals: Look!  Look!  It´s Pat

White Rabbit: Hold up his head!

Animal 1: Don’t choke him.

Animal  2: How was it?

White Rabbit: What happened to you? Tell us all about it!

Pat: I don´t know, suddenly I was thrown through the air like a sky-rocket!

White Rabbit: We could see that!  And since there´s nothing else we can do, we must burn the house down!

Narrator: Alice could not see what was happening outside, but she could hear them, so she said.

Alice: Wait!  And you Mr. Rabbit, if you burn the house, I´ll set my cat Dinah at you!  I am warning you, she likes to eat rabbits!

Narrator: There was silence instantly, and Alice waited for an answer.  At lastShe felt a shower of little pebbles coming from the window, and some of them hit her in the face.   Alice noticed that the pebbles were all turning into little cakes as they lay on the floor, and a bright idea came into her head.

Alice: I´ll eat one of these cakes, and I hope I will not grow bigger.

Narrator: She ate a cake, and she began shrinking.  As soon as she was small enough to get through the door, she ran out of the house, and found a crowd of little animals around a lizard, which was Pat, who was in the middle of them.  When they saw her, they chased her, but Alice ran off as hard as she could, and soon found herself safe in a forest.

Alice: Now I have to eat or drink something to grow to my right size again.  I wonder what it will be.

Narrator: Near her there was a big mushroom.  She stretched herself up on tiptoe, and peeped over the edge of the mushroom, and she saw a large blue caterpillar, that was sitting on the top  smoking a long hookah.  The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each.  At last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and  talked to her  in a languid voice.

Caterpillar: Who are you?

Alice: I suppose I don´t know…at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.

Caterpillar: What do you mean by that? Explain yourself!

Alice: I´m afraid I can’t explain myself.  But when you have to turn into a chrysalis… and then after that into a butterfly, you will feel like I do.

Caterpillar: Chrysalis… butterfly… I don´t like the idea.  Now tell me… who are you?

Alice: It´s better if I go, Mr. Caterpillar, or we will start the conversation all over again.  Put the hookah into your mouth and start smoking again.  See you!

Caterpillar: Come back!  I’ve something important to say!

Narrator: Alice turned and came back again.

Alice: What is it?

Caterpillar: Keep your temper.

Alice: Is that all?

Caterpillar: Of course not.  So you think you have changed?

Alice: I don´t think so.   I don’t keep the same size for fifteen minutes together!.

Caterpillar: Are you content now?

Alice: Impossible.  I would like to be a little larger.  I must measure three inches height.  It´s ridiculous!

Caterpillar: It is a very good height! That´s what I measure.

Alice: Forgive me, Mr. Caterpillar, don´t feel offended, but I am not used to being so small.

Caterpillar: You’ll get used to it.

Narrator: The  Caterpillar  put the hookah into its mouth and began smoking again.  Then it took the hookah out of its mouth and yawned several times. Then it got down off the mushroom, and crawled away in the grass, and said.

Caterpillar: One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.

Alice: One side of  what? The other side of what?

Caterpillar: Of the mushroom, everybody knows that.

Narrator: As soon as the Caterpillar left, Alice stretched her arms, and cut a piece of the mushroom.  One piece with her right arm, and another piece with her left arm.   Then she ate a little from both hands until she was of normal size.   Then she put some bread in her pocket, and kept walking through the forest.  Suddenly she saw a large black cat who was grinning from ear to ear, it was Cheshire Cat.

Alice: Oh, would you tell me, please, which way I have to go from here?

Cheshire Cat: Ha, ha, ha, ha… that depends on where you want to get to.

Alice: I don’t care that much.

Cheshire  Cat: Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.

Alice: As  long as I get somewhere.  What kind of people live here?

Cheshire  Cat: To the north, lives a Hatter.  And to the south lives a March Hare. Visit either you like, they’re both mad.

Alice: But I don’t like mad people.

Cheshire  Cat: We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.

Alice: Why do you say that?  How do you know I’m mad?

Cheshire  Cat: Because you are here. Tell me, are you going to play croquet with the Queen today?

Alice: I like croquet, but I haven’t been invited yet.

Cheshire Cat: Anyway, you’ll see me there.

Narrator: And the Cat vanished.  But it vanished quite slowly.  First, its tail.  Then,  its legs.  Next, its body, and finally its grim.

Cheshire Cat: Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Alice: This is funny!  I’ve often seen a cat without a grin, but a grin without a cat! I´ll go visit the Hare.

Narrator: She hadn´t gone much farther, when she saw the house of the March Hare.  The chimneys were shaped like ears and the roof was made of fur.  She walked toward the house, and ate a small piece of the magical mushroom.  There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it.  A Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the other two were using it as a cushion.  The table was large but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it.  When Alice approached them, they said.

March Hare, Hatter: There´s no room for you!  There´s no room!

Alice: Of course there is!  I´ll sit down in that armchair.

March Hare: Then drink some wine!

Alice: How can I drink wine, if there´s only tea!

March Hare: I knew there wasn´t any wine.

Alice: Then why are you telling me to drink it.  You are not being polite!

March Hare: Well, it´s also not polite to sit down without being invited.

Alice: I didn’t know it was your table, it’s set for more than four.

Narrator: Meanwhile, the Hatter was looking at Alice silently.  Finally he said.

Hatter: You should cut your hair, it´s too long.

Alice: I can see that they they didn´t tell you not to make personal remarks.

Hatter: Tell me, why is a raven like a writing-desk?

Alice: I like riddles.  I think I can guess that.

March Hare: Do you mean you know the answer?

Alice: Yes, I do.

March Hare: Tell me what you think.  Say what you mean.

Alice: I do, at least I mean what I say . . . it´s the same thing.

Hatter: It´s not the same thing.  Is it the same thing to say I see what I eat, as I eat what I see?  …or I like what I have, as I have what I like? … or I breathe when I sleep, as I sleep when I breathe?

Narrator: There was silent for a minute, while Alice thought over all she could remember about ravens and writing-desks.  Then the Hatter said while looking at his watch.

Hatter: What day is today?

Alice:  It´s the fourth.

Hatter: This watch is wrong for two days.  I told you March Hare, that  butter wouldn’t work.

March Hare: It was the best butter.  Let me see your watch…  I´ll dip it into the tea and I hope it works.

Alice: What a funny watch.  It tells the day of the month, but not the time.

Hatter: Does your watch tells you what year it is?

Alice: Of course not,

Hatter: Then I see nothing strange with mine.The Dormouse is asleep again, I´ll pour  a little hot tea in its nose.  Now that I remember … do you have the answer to the riddle?

Alice: No, I give up, what’s the answer?

Hatter: We don´t have the slightest idea.  Isn´t it right, March Hare?

March Hare: That´s right.  We are getting bored.  Tell us a story, young lady.

Alice: Right now, I can´t remember any.

March Hare: Then the Dormouse will.

Alice: But the Dormouse is sleeping.

Dormouse: I´m not asleep.  I heard every word you said.

Hatter: Tell us something.

Alice: Yes, please!

Hatter: Don´t talk, young lady!

Narrator: Alice was angry at his rudeness, she stood up and walked off.  Neither of the others tried to stop her, though she looked back once or twice, half hoping that they would call after her: the last time she saw them, they were trying to put the Dormouse into the teapot.

Alice: I don´t want to see you again! …  Oh, in that tree!  There´s a little door!  I´ll go in… but what a beautiful garden!  It´s the one I saw through the little door in that room!  There are colorful flowers… and cool fountains!

Narrator: A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden.  The roses growing on it were white, but there were three poker cards, who were gardeners.  busily painting them red.  Alice heard their conversation.

Two: Look out, Five!  You´re splashing paint all over me!

Five: It wasn´t me.  It was Seven, he pushed me with his elbow.

Seven: You are always blaming me.

Five: Seven, be quiet.  Yesterday, the Queen said you deserved to be beheaded!

Two: Why?

Seven: That’s none of your business, Two! … Look, a little girl!

Alice: Would you be so kind to tell me why you are painting those roses?

Two: You see, Miss, we made a mistake.  We planted a white rose tree, instead of a red one, just as the Queen told us.  So we are doing our best, before she comes.

Seven: Quiet!  The Queen!

Narrator: The three gardeners instantly threw themselves to the floor, flat on their faces.   There was a sound of many footsteps, and Alice looked around, eager to see the Queen. First came twenty soldiers carrying clubs; these were all shaped like the three gardeners, they were poker cards.   Next the courtiers.  After these came the royal children, they were ornamented with hearts, jumping merrily along hand in hand. Next came the guests, mostly Kings and Queens, and among them, the White Rabbit.  Then followed the Knave of Hearts, carrying the King’s crown, and, last of all this grand procession, came the King and Queen of Hearts. When the procession came opposite to Alice, they all stopped and looked at her,  and the Queen said.

Queen: Who is she?  Nobody knows!  … What’s your name, child?

Alice: My name is Alice, your Majesty.

Narrator: But she added, to herself.

Alice: I shouldn´t be afraid, they are only a pack of cards.

Queen: And who are these on the floor? … All my courtiers are the same on the opposite side!  Answer me, Alice!

Alice: How should I know? It’s none of my business.

Queen: Off with her head!

Crowd: Yes!  Off with her head!

King: One moment, I the King have the right to speak… don´t you see my dear Queen, that she is only a child.  Maybe she knows how to play croquet.

Queen: If she knows how to play, I will forgive her…  Alice, follow me, stand beside the Rabbit.

Alice: Hello, Mr. Rabbit, we finally meet again.  Where´s the Duchess?

White Rabbit: Quiet!  She will be executed.

Alice: Why?

White Rabbit: She was late, the Queen was angry, and the Duchess slapped her.

Alice: Ha, ha, it´s funny.

White Rabbit: The Queen will hear you!  … we have arrived to the croquet-ground.

Narrator: The ground was strange.  It was all ridges and furrows.  The balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the soldiers had to double themselves up and to stand on their hands and feet, to make the arches.  When the Queen shouted, people began running in all directions, tumbling up against each other.  But when someone was about to beat the Queen, she shouted.

Queen: Off with his head!

Narrator: Alice played as best as she could, but when she beat the Queen, she said.

Queen: Off with her head!

Alice: You can´t leave me without my head.  I have the right to be judged!

Queen: Very well, let´s go to my palace!

Narrator: That´s how Alice entered the palace, accused of beating the Queen in a croquet game.   There was a jury.  The Hatter and the March Hare were the Members of the Jury.  Alice imagined herself without her head, so she took from her pocket a piece of cake, ate it, and said to herself.

Alice: If I grow to my full size, I will be safe.  It´s my only chance…..  Yes, I am growing, I´m getting bigger and bigger!

Queen: I will say the sentence first,  then the verdict… off with her head!

Alice: I don´t think you can make it, Queen of Hearts!  You´re nothing but a card!And I am big!

Queen: I order you to be quiet!

Alice: I will not be quiet!  All of you are only a pack of cards!  I am not afraid of you!

Narrator: Then all the cards stood up and angrily came flying down upon her.  The little girl tried to beat them off, but she couldn´t.  She tried to stood up, but then she found out she had her head in the lap of her sister, and that everything had been a wonderful dream.

Alice: Dear sister, I had such a curious dream!… Someday I will tell you about it.

Narrator: Suddenly, Alice saw a Rabbit.

Alice: Look!  Look sister!  A White Rabbit with a waistcoat and a watch!  I´ll follow him! …  Come!  Come with me to wonderland!

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass byLewis Carroll. A  classic children´s book. In the middle of the book was a letter written by Lewis Carroll in 1876 to the children who were reading his book. It comes at the end of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and it says:

An Easter Greeting

to

Every Child Who Loves

Alice

Dear Child,

Please to fancy, if you can, that you are reading a real letter, from a real friend whom you have seen, and whose voice you can seem to yourself to hear wishing you, as I do now with all my heart, a happy Easter.

Do you know that delicious dreamy feeling when one first wakes on a summer morning, with the twitter of birds in the air, and the fresh breeze coming in at the open window–when, lying lazily with eyes half shut, one sees as in a dream green boughs waving, or waters rippling in a golden light? It is a pleasure very near to sadness, bringing tears to one’s eyes like a beautiful picture or poem. And is not that a Mother’s gentle hand that undraws your curtains, and a Mother’s sweet voice that summons you to rise? To rise and forget, in the bright sunlight, the ugly dreams that frightened you so when all was dark–to rise and enjoy another happy day, first kneeling to thank that unseen Friend, who sends you the beautiful sun?

Are these strange words from a writer of such tales as “Alice”? And is this a strange letter to find in a book of nonsense? It may be so. Some perhaps may blame me for thus mixing together things grave and gay; others may smile and think it odd that any one should speak of solemn things at all, except in church and on a Sunday: but I think–nay, I am sure–that some children will read this gently and lovingly, and in the spirit in which I have written it.

For I do not believe God means us thus to divide life into two halves–to wear a grave face on Sunday, and to think it out-of-place to even so much as mention Him on a week-day. Do you think He cares to see only kneeling figures, and to hear only tones of prayer–and that He does not also love to see the lambs leaping in the sunlight, and to hear the merry voices of the children, as they roll among the hay? Surely their innocent laughter is as sweet in His ears as the grandest anthem that ever rolled up from the “dim religious light” of some solemn cathedral?

And if I have written anything to add to those stores of innocent and healthy amusement that are laid up in books for the children I love so well, it is surely something I may hope to look back upon without shame and sorrow (as how much of life must then be recalled!) when my turn comes to walk through the valley of shadows.

This Easter sun will rise on you, dear child, feeling your “life in every limb,” and eager to rush out into the fresh morning air–and many an Easter-day will come and go, before it finds you feeble and gray-headed, creeping wearily out to bask once more in the sunlight–but it is good, even now, to think sometimes of that great morning when the “Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings.”

Surely your gladness need not be the less for the thought that you will one day see a brighter dawn than this–when lovelier sights will meet your eyes than any waving trees or rippling waters–when angel-hands shall undraw your curtains, and sweeter tones than ever loving Mother breathed shall wake you to a new and glorious day–and when all the sadness, and the sin, that darkened life on this little earth, shall be forgotten like the dreams of a night that is past!

Tree: I am strong, but the wind is stronger than me, and bends me.

Rabotity: The wind bends you.

Narrator: Then the wind said.

Wind: I am strong, but I can´t pass through a wall.

Rabotiti: The wall stops you, but you bend the tree, and the tree broke my leg. There´s is nothing stronger than the wall.

Narrator: Then the wall said.

Wall: I am strong, but the mouse breaks the cement and makes a hole.

Rabotity: Then the mouse can break you, but you can stop the wind. The wind bends the tree, the tree broke my leg, so there is nothing stronger than a mouse.

Narrator: Then the mouse said.

Mouse: I am strong, but the cat eat me.

Rabotity: The cat eats you. But you can break the wall. The wall can stop the wind, the wind can bend a tree, and the tree broke my leg. There is nothing stronger than the cat.

Narrator: Then the cat said.

Cat: I am strong, but the rope can strangle me.

Rabotity: The rope strangles you. The cat eats the mouse. The mouse breaks the wall. The wall can stop the wind. The wind bends the tree, and the tree broke my leg. There is nothing stronger than the rope.

Narrator: Then the rope said.

Rope: I am strong, but the knife can cut me off.

Narrator: Then the knife said.

Knife: I am strong. But the fire can melt me down.

Rabotity: The fire melts you. You cuts off the rope. The rope strangles the cat. The cat eats the mouse. The mouse breaks the wall. The wall stops the wind. The wind bends the tree, and the tree broke my leg. There is nothing stronger that the fire.

Narrator: Then the fire said.

Man: I am Strong, but Zanahary, Madagascar´s God, makes me die.

Narrator: Once upon a time there was a boy named Jack.  One morning he went to seek his fortune. He hadn’t gone very far before he met a cat.

Cat: Where are you going, Jack?

Jack: I am going to seek my fortune.

Cat: May I go with you?

Jack: Yes, the more the merrier.

Narrator: They went a little further and they met a dog.

Dog: Where are you going, Jack?

Jack: I am going to seek my fortune.

Dog: May I go with you?

Jack: Yes, the more the merrier.

Narrator: They went a little further and they met a goat.

Goat: Where are you going, Jack?

Jack: I am going to seek my fortune.

Goat: May I go with you?

Jack: Yes, the more the merrier.

Narrator: They went a little further and they met a bull.

Bull: Where are you going, Jack?

Jack: I am going to seek my fortune.

Bull: May I go with you?

Jack: Yes, the more the merrier.

Narrator: They went a little further and they met a rooster.

Rooster: Where are you going, Jack?

Jack: I am going to seek my fortune.

Rooster: May I go with you?

Jack: Yes, the more the merrier.

Narrator: Well, they went on till it was about dark, and they began to think of some place where they could spend the night. Then they saw a house.

Jack: Keep still, let me look through the window.

Cat, Dog, Goat, Bull ,Rooster: We want to go with you, Jack.

Jack: No, wait here.

Narrator: Then Jack went to see through the window, and he saw some robbers counting over their money.

Jack: Oh, I must go and tell the others what I saw.

Narrator: Then Jack went back and told them what he saw.

Jack: I have an idea. We will make all the noise we can.

Cat, Dog, Goat, Bull, Rooster: Good plan.

Narrator: So when they were all ready Jack gave the word, and the cat mewed, and the dog barked, and the goat bleated, and the bull bellowed, and the rooster crowed, and altogether they made such a dreadful noise that it frightened the robbers all away.

Jack: Great job! Now lets go and take possession of the house.

Narrator: Jack was afraid the robbers would come back in the night, and so when it came time to go to bed he said.

Jack: Cat, you will get in the rocking-chair, and you Dog get under the table. As to Goat, go upstairs, and you Bull go to the cellar, and finally, you, rooster fly up on to the roof, and I will go to bed.

Cat, Dog, Goat, Bull, Rooster: Yes, Jack.

Narrator: When the robbers saw it was all dark, they sent one man back to the house to look after their money. Then he came back very frightened and said.

Robber: I went back to the house, went in and tried to sit down in the rocking-chair, and there was an old woman knitting, and she stuck her knitting-needles into me.

Narrator: But that was the cat.

Robber: The I went to the table to look after the money, and there was a shoemaker under the table, and he stuck his awl into me.

Narrator: But that was the dog.

Robber: I started to go upstairs, and there was a man up there threshing, and he knocked me down with his flail.

Narrator: But that was the goat.

Robber: I started to go down cellar, and there was a man down there chopping wood, and he knocked me up with his ax.

Narrator: That was the bull.

Robber: But I shouldn’t have minded all that if it hadn’t been for that little fellow on top of the house, who kept a-hollering, “Chuck him up to me-e! Chuck him up to me-e!”

Narrator: But that was the cock-a-doodle-do.

SCRIPT:

Narrator: Once  upon a time there was a miller, who was so poor that the only thing he could inherti his three children was a  mill, his donkey, and his cat.  The oldest son was Charles, the second son was John, and the youngest son was Jack.

Charles: Now that our father is gone, I will keep the mill.

John: I  will take the donkey.

Jack: There´s nothing else for me, so I will take the cat.

Narrator: But Jack thought.

Jack: My brothers will be able to earn an honest life , but as for me, though the cat may feed himself by catching mice, I  don´t know what I will eat.

Narrator: The cat, who had overheard his young master, jumped upon his shoulder, and, rubbing himself gently against his cheek, began to speak.

Cat: Dear master, don´t be sad.  I am not as useless as you think, I will can make a fortune for you, if only you will buy me a pair of boots, and give me that old bag.

Narrator: Jack had very little money to spend, but, knowing that the cat was a faithful old friend, he made up his mind to trust him, and so spent all he possessed in a smart pair of boots made of buff-colored leather.

Cat: Thanks master, you will not be sorry for spending all your money in these pair of foot which fit me perfectly.  Now I will take the old bag and will go into the woods where there are a number of rabbits.

Jack: Be careful my loyal friend.

Cat: I will.   See you soon.

Narrator: The cat went into the woods.  Then he put some bran and fresh parsley in the bag and  he put it on the ground.

Cat: I will hide behind those bushes and wait for the rabbits to come.

Narrator: Soon two little rabbits approached the bag and smelled the food.  When the cat saw them, he pulled the strings and caught them.

Cat: I got you!  I have to go to the palace now.

Narrator: When he arrived at the palace he told the guard.

Cat: I need to speak to the King.  I have something important to tell him.

Guard: Come this way.

Narrator: When he was taken to the king, he bowed and said.

Cat: Sire, my Lord the Marquis of Carabas has commanded me to present these rabbits to your Majesty, with his respects.

King: Please, give my thanks to the Marquis.

Cat: Yes, my King.  Now I have to leave.

Narrator: The marquis was really the poor Jack. Then the king ordered his head cook  to prepare the rabbits for dinner, and he and his daughter had supper with great enjoyment.  When the cat went home he told Jack.

Cat: Master.  We will always have food in our table.

Jack: Thank you for everything you do.

Narrator: Cat also did not fail to keep the King and his courtiers well supplied with game.

Cat: My king, this food that I bring you is from my Lord the Marquis of Carabas.

King: I thank him very much, he is a very kind man.  But tell me, who is this  strange nobleman, whom no one has ever seen, but who sends such generous presents to me?

Cat: You will know it very soon.  I promise.

Narrator: The cat decided that it t was time for his master to be introduced at Court. So one day he persuaded him to go and bathe in a river  having heard that the King would soon pass that way.

Cat: Master, the water in that near river is so fresh.  I encourage you to go and swim there, you will feel much better.

Jack: It´s a good idea.  I will go right this instant.

Narrator: When Jack was inside the water, suddenly the King’s carriage appeared in sight.

Cat: Help, help! My Lord the Marquis of Carabas is drowning!

King: Stop the carriage!

Narrator: The King put his head out of the carriage window.

King: It´s the cat!  Go quickly and help the Marquis.

Narrator: While Jack was being taken out of the water, the cat ran to the King and said.

Cat: Some robbers came and took my master’s clothes while he was bathing!

Narrator: The truth was that the  cat had hidden them under a stone.

King: Groom!  Quickly, give me the  purple and gold suit from the royal wardrobe, and give it to the Marquis.

Jack: Oh thanks my King.  I don´t desserve to wear this fine clothes.

King: Nonsense!  You look very good in them.  I invite you to come to the carriage.

Jack: I can´t accept that.

King: Please do.  My daughter and I will be pleased if you join us.

Narrator: Jack finally accepted and he sat nexto to the Princess.  The Princess smiled at him  so sweetly, that he fell in love with her there and then.

Cat: Coachman, go in that direction.  The road is better that way.

Narrator: And then the cat  ran on ahead as fast as he could, until he came to a field of corn, where the workers were busy, and said.

Cat: The King will shortly pass this way. If he should ask you to whom this field belongs, remember that you say, ‘To the Marquis of Carabas’ .  If you disobey me, you will be taken away from this land.

Narrator: The workers were so afraid the cat would keep his word that they promised to obey.

Workers: We will do as you say, but please don´t take us away from our land.

Cat: I promise.

Narrator: Then the cat ran on and told all the other workers in the land laborers to give the same answer.  Meanwhile at the carriage.

King: Ha, ha, ha,  This is a fine day.  And you, Marquis, are a very  pleasant companion.

Jack: It´s an honor being here with you and your precious daughter.

King: Coachman!  Drive slowly!  I want to admire this beautiful country.

Narrator: The carriage arrived to where the corn field.

King: Workers, What a fine field of wheat! To whom does it belong?

Workers: To our Lord the Marquis of Carabas.

Narrator: Next they met a herd of cattle, and again the King asked.

King: To whom do they belong?

Sheppards: To the Marquis of Carabas.

Narrator: The Marquis listened astonished, and thought what a very wonderful friend his dear cat was.  Meanwhile the cat had arrived at a castle, which belonged to a cruel Ogre, who owned the lands the King admired. Puss knocked at the door.

Servant: What do you want?

Cat: I need to the the Ogre.

Servant: Come in, and wait.

Narrator: The Ogre received him quite well because he had never seen a cat in boots before, so they started chatting.

Cat: I once heard, great Ogre, that you possessed the power of changing yourself into any kind of animal you chose–a lion or an elephant, for instance.

Ogre: Well, so I can.

Cat: Dear me! how much I should like to see you do it now.

Narrator: The Ogre was only too pleased to find a chance of showing how very clever he was, so he promised to transform himself into any animal Cat might mention.

Cat: Oh! I will leave the choice to you.

Ogre: Very well, I will transform myself into a lion.

Narrator: Immediately there appeared an enormous lion, roaring, and lashing with its tail, and looking as though it meant to gobble the cat.

Cat: Oh, this is terrible.  I have to escape!

Narrator: The cat was really frightened, and, jumping out of the window, managed to scramble on to the roof, though he could scarcely hold on to the tiles because of his high-heeled boots.

Ogre: Ha, ha, ha! Come down, I will not hurt you.  See?  I am an Ogre again.

Cat: You are very clever.  Of course, it was all very wonderful, but it would be more wonderful still if you, who are so great and fierce, could transform yourself into some timid little creature, such as a mouse. That, I suppose, would be quite impossible ?

Ogre: Not at all, one is quite as easy to me as the other, as I will show you.

Narrator: And in a moment a little brown mouse was frisking about all over the floor.

Cat: Now or never! You´re mine now, and I´ll gobble you!

Narrator: At the same moment all the gentlemen and ladies whom the wicked Ogre had held in his castle under a spell, became disenchanted.

Lady: We all are very grateful for what you have done.  We will do anything to please you.

Cat: Well, I need that all of you enter into the  service of the Marquis of Carabas.

Lady: We will do it gladly.

Narrator: So now the cat had a splendid castle with treasures.  He then ordered a magnificent feast to be prepared, and went to the castle gates to welcome his master and the royal party.  As soon as the castle appeared in sight, the King said.

King: The castle is magnificent!

Narrator: Then cat bowing low, opened the castle gates.

Cat: Please your Majesty, enter the home of the most noble the Marquis of Carabas.

Narrator: Full of surprise, the King turned to the Marquis.

King: Is this splendid castle indeed yours?  Not even our own palace is more beautiful, and doubtless it is as splendid within as without.

Cat: Please, your Majesty, come this way.  There´s a group of noble gentlemen and fair ladies  waiting to receive you.

Narrator: Jack, or the Marquis as he was now called, gave his hand to the young Princess, and led her to the banquet.

Jack: Enjoy the feast!

Princess: This is wonderful, and the food is delicious.

Narrator: Long past midnight they had to leave the castle.

King: Thank you, Marquis, my dear son.

Princess: Father, please, you make me blush.

Jack: I lay my heart and my fortune at your feet,  sweet princess.

Narrator: And so the miller’s son married the King’s daughter, and there were great rejoicings throughout the land.  After a few days…

Jack: Cat, I will never forget what you have done.  I owe you all my good fortune.  You are a faithful friend.

Cat: All I want now is meat and cream.  And surely I will not run  after mice and rats, except for exercise and amusement.

SCRIPT:

Narrator: Once upon a time in a village there was a small farmhouse.  In the stable there lived a Donkey who worked very hard for many years.

Donkey: I am too old to carry loads.  I am tired, so good-bye old farm.  I am going to Bremen-town to sing and play.

Narrator: Donkey walked along the road for more than an hour. Suddenly, he stepped right on the paws of a Dog.

Dog: Oh, please, please, don´t step on me!  I am too old, I can not hunt, and I can not run.

Donkey: You´re not old!  You look fine to me, so come along with me to Bremen-town to sing.

Dog: Really?  Can I go with you?

Donkey: Sure!  Let´s go.

Narrator: And off they went to Bremen.  Later, they found a Cat sitting in the road.

Donkey: Now, what´t the matter with you?

Cat: Meow, Meow!  I am an old cat.  I am too old to catch a mouse.  I am not even welcome in my own house! I don´t know what to do.  Where will I go?

Donkey: Come with us to Bremen…  come on, and join our show!  We will become town musicians.

Cat: That’s  a good idea.  I will go with you.  Let´s go to play and sing in Bremen-Town!

Narrator: After that, the three travelers passed by a yard.  They saw a Rooster.

Donkey: What is that sound?

Cat: It´s the rooster.  He tells the time throughout the year.

Donkey: You soud as if you are in danger.  Tell us what is wrong.  Please, tell us.

Rooster: I am in trouble!  I will soon be rooster soup, so I have to run away from here.  But… where are you going so fast?

Dog: We are gointo to Bremen-Town.  Come with us!  Leave this place and join our band.

Rooster: Sure, I will join you.  Let´s go to play and sing in Bremen-Town.

Narrator: The rooster told them that Bremen was still very far off and that they should find a place to sleep. So the donkey and the dog slept under a large tree.  The cat got up among the branches, and the rooster flew up to thetop.  Then he said.

Rooster: Oh, look over there my friends! I see a light! There´s a house where we can spend the night!

Donkey: Let´s go over there.

Narrator: When they approached the house, they looked through the window.  The house was full of robbers.

Dog: Hey, I can´t see!  Tell me, what do you see.

Donkey: What do I see?  The house is full of robbers.

Rooster: We should be the ones sitting in that nice table with all that food!  That should be our house!

Donkey: Yes, indeed, I wish we were there. Let´s make a plan to get those robbers out of the house.  Let´s scare them.  We´ll sing, and sing, and sing our song so loud until we break the windows .  Let´s make them know that we are here.

Narrator: Then they started singing that indeed they broke the windows.

All: And Yahoo!, Yahoo!  Zan, zun, zin, rim, ram, ren, Big honey hen! Chiquiti boom, chiquiti bam, hobbleham!

Robber 1: What´s that terrible sound.

Robber 2: Gobblins, ghouilies, ghosts!

Robber 1: They are attacking us!  We have to escape!  Run, run for your life!

Narrator: The robbers ran out yelling at the dreadful sound. They thought they were ghosts, and away they went into the woods until they could no longer be seen.

Cat: Hooray, we did it!  They have gone away!  Now we can sit down at the table and eat and sing, and dance and play!

Rooster: Why sure! Let´s stay!  Let´s play and sing!  We are home at last!

Narrator: And they ate until they were full and fell asleep.  And the four Bremen town musicians liked the little house so much, that they stayed there to live forever.
