  • Find an acting class.  Remember that you need training and someone to tell you what areas you may need to work on.

  • Always memorize your lines.  Concentrate and do it from the point of view of your character.

  • Be ready to improvise.

  • Practice in front of the mirror, so you can see your facial expressions.

  • Record or videotape your performance so you can see how you’re doing.

  • Breath deeply before going to stage or make an audition, relax, and just concentrate on your dialogues.

  • Don’t be afraid of standing in front of a lot of people.  Forget about the audience and just care about the other person in the scene.   You need to feel confident.

  • Get “in the shoes” of your character.  Think, feel, and act the way he/she thinks, feels, and acts.  Your character should try to convince the audience, not you.  If your character can’t walk very well, then place a small pebble inside your shoe. Watch how people act in real life situations.  Observe how others act when they are angry, sad, happy.  How they interact with others and with their environment. Faking it doesn’t work.  You need to feel it.

  • Study your character’s personality:  Is your character Funny? Mean? Sarcastic? Aggressive? Shy? Friendly? Selfish?  Nice?  Arrogant?   e.g. If you need to cry, then think of a sad time to make it look realistic.

  • Practice the basic emotions:  Sadness, Happiness, Jealousy, Anger.

  • Ask your teacher or coach what he/she expects from your character.

  • Be a little more dramatic than you are in real life.  Speak louder and clearly.  Don’t rush because no one will understand what you’re saying, and don’t speak so slow, because you will bore the audience.  Exaggerate your body movements.
